He arguably beat RJJ in that first match as a huge dog. Big dog in the rematch from what I recall, and he KNOCKED HIM OUT.

I think that and some of his other solid wins gets him in.

In his defense, he has way more bigger victories than Buster.

Coming from a huge Jones fan, Roy wasn't completely shot until after Tarver knocked him out...

He was past his best, slower legs, fast hands, but throwing one shot at a time, his reflexes were not as good.. But it isn't fair to Tarver say he was "shot" he was still the best P4P fighter, and Tarver didn't wait until Jones looked bad to call him out.

That being said, Tarver deserves a great amount of credit for beating Roy, who was pretty much 50-0 minus a dq loss, and the best fighter for quite some time, even though, he was not a prime Roy Jones by any means.

I agree that Tarver would have caused Roy lots of trouble at any point in Roy's career. But Roy came back from heavy too quickly without expert help and advice, and he paid the price.

It's no use saying they were the same age. Tarver didn't turn pro til he was 28. Roy had fought twice as many fights as Tarver going into their first fight. Roy kept his Ruiz weight on for Tyson, and then had to get it off in a hurry for Tarver.

Tarver was mentally and physically at his best. Roy wasn't.

I think Tarver was a great fighter, but I think a better version of Roy would have beaten him easier, and twice if necessary.

But Tarver definitely deserves credit, and he should get in.

i love this generic recycled and laughable excuse about why roy got his ass kicked by tarver. "he had to lose muscle to make weight"
gee, how do you train to lose 10-12 pounds of muscle? :rofl
you act like he bulked up to 225 pounds....he weighed in , with clothes onat 193 pounds.....

new criteria for Hall of Fame
4 title fight wins over 3 guys

    Montell Griffin
    Roy Jones Jr
    Clinton Woods

somehow beating clinton woods and griffin doesnt generate hall of fame buzz

My gut instinct is no, but I guess he's no less deserving than Jose Torres for example.

For a brief window of a couple of years he was an excellent fighter, and the wins over Griffin and Harding are not given enough credit in my opinion. However, there's plenty of fighters who should be getting the call before Tarver does.

Tarver has a completely different style, plus this guy stayed a Amatur for a LONG time... he fought in the 96 Olympics, Roy went pro in the late 80's. RJJ been in the pros a lot longer than Tarver, and his style was not the type which could last, as it was all based on reflexes. Jones was past his best as far back as late 2001, sure he was still solid, but he was not the best RJJ anymore, he started to lay on the ropes more, and indication of taking breathers and probably resting his legs. By time he moved up in weight, and moved back down, it was taxing on his body. But the biggest problem, besides his physical decline was that Tarver cracked that jaw and took away his confidence, and Jones was completely done then.

The punch tarver KO'd him with was a punch Jones didn't see, when he was throwing a wide as left hook while out of position, something he wouldve NEVER did in his prime.
