    Thanks for the vid Freddy

Ok, refresh my memory. How does a Knock Down get scored in these Amature matches?

From what I saw in this 3rd round, If this was a Pro fight Valdez would of destroyed Nevin. Did you see the other rounds??

In the first round the scores were 5-5 which I thought Nevin won at least 8-5. My scoring as per amateur code is shots landed in face not shots landed on gloves. Body shots can be given in the amateur code but for whatever reason judges tend to be reluctant (rightly or wrongly) to score them.

In the 2nd round I though Valdez was just walking in with his hands up and Nevin nailed him clean in the face with righ hooks and uppercuts. In fact I though it was a very dominant round for Nevin.

Third round was even until the last minute. Valdez scored a peach of a body shot which put Nevin down. He stayed down for the full 8 seconds. To give credit to Nevin he landed some shots in Valdez face because he knew Valdez would get excited by the ko and go in for the kill. If it had been a professional boxing match and there was a 4th round It would be very intersting to see if Valdez would have eventually got to him with body shots. But thats just my opionion. If you can watch the whole fight in its entireity you can judge for yourself. The whole fight is available in ireland on www.rte.ie in the rte player section but you may have to be a resident to access it similarly to the way I can't see nbc highlights on their website when i am in ireland. But i am sure it will be up soon. By the way - those highlights were the 3rd round.

    Thats a silly comment.
    Nevin clearly won.
99% of neutrals agreed with the decision.
I like valdez and have been following him since beijing but if he had gotten the decision it would have been a travesty.

    You are a **** for calling Nevin a *****.

Valdez was far less effective in the other rounds, he struggled to get his body attack going with Nevin's footwork and was caught with some lovely counters. The 5-5 in the first round was probably generous to Valdez. The 2nd round was similar to the first round, Nevin's footwork and movement causing Valdez problems, Valdez lunging in and getting caught with counters. Valdez had his spells now and then landing the odd flurry when he'd catch Nevin on the ropes, but again couldn't get the body attack going.

By the 3rd with all the movement he was having to do to stay away from Valdez Nevin was starting to tire. Although for the first 2 mins Nevin was still getting the better of the action, although imo probably should of been penalised by this stage for excessive holding. Then Valdez comes on strong applying more pressure to Nevin, and catches him with a punch perfect body shots while on the ropes. A shot that would of finished off plenty of fighters. Nevin takes the count and is clearly still feeling the effects of the shot. Valdez applies pressure and scores with some good shots, but he also gets reckless and gets caught with easy scores for Nevin, not damaging but clear scoring blows in amateur boxing.
Hence the reason for the wide score at the end of the fight, which imo should of been closer. But then again Nevin definitely won the first by a few so that somewhat made up for the fact Nevin never got a warning and shouldn't have won the last as clear as he did.

I think anyone looking at the fight objectively would score it to Nevin. Freddy struggles to overcome his patriotic bias and I'm not surprised he's just posted the third round where Valdez is all over Nevin in the latter stages. That's not a slant against him, it's admirable to have such love for one's country but it does that when Freddy says a Mexican is robbed they should probably take a look at the fight before believing that's definitely what happened.

In a pro fight it'd be 28-28(10-9, 10-9, 8-10) and you'd have fancied Valdez to possibly force the stoppage if it went any further, while Nevin was still doing what he needed for an amateur contest (getting scoring blows in and and reaching the end of that 3rd round), he was wilting and while maybe Nevin could last another round, anymore than that and Valdez sould surely have him. Some of the reasons why Valdez will make such a great pro, the wearing effect of his relentless body attack and his seemingly good engine and stamina.

Combined with his perfect English I think the kids destined to be a star.
Nevin with his skill has the ability to be one himself, but he'd need that bit more physical toughness and strength to be able to deal with someone like Valdez in the pros.

    and Puerto Rico does? :rofl
Mexico has taken at least 2 Gold Medals in Boxing that I can recall Puerto Rico has NONE.

With that being said I do hope that the last Boricuas that are left in the 2012 pull Olympics gold.

Do you see the the differeance between Boricuas like you and Mexicans like myself? You hate while, I cheer your people on. :hi: I don't allow one pathetic Bori with a chip on his shoulder make me insult the many Puerto Ricans I have befriended from Rincon to la Isla de Culebra. :good

As much as I hated seeing Valdez lose, I have to admit he lost fair and square. He is definately more suited for the pros though. Most of the guys that do good in the amateurs don't necessarily do **** in the pros. I can bet that Valdez will accomplish more in the pros than the person who wins Gold. The same goes for some of the USA olympic boxers who got eliminated.

You also have the judges in your favor.
