I don't think we should use the 'what if theory' when comparing
era's.

Rocky was an early-1950's fighter.

And for his 'period in time', no one was better.

 

It was Sonny Banks, not Sonny Isaacs.

And, yeah, it was an awful habit to stick with, that vulnerability to the left hook. It possibly accounts for a great deal of the damage he suffered.

Before that June 18, 1963 bout.

The 29 year-old 'Sir Henry', had gone 12-1-0 (7 KO's) since mid-1959.

Henry, was by the far, the best opponent that Cassius Clay would face in
his young career.

But, 'Ol Enry' was 'sliced up' bad in his previous bout (March 26, 1963) with
Dick Richardson.

The pre-fight analysis was, could "Sir Henry's" skin around the eye's hold up to
the 'slashing' punches of Cassius Clay.

In a 'class act' before the fight, Cassius Clay called Henry Cooper 'a bum', and
not worthy of a Top 10 ranking.

The Great Clapton's stint in the YB's was short lived; tho I don't think it was as early as '63. He was replaced by the Great Jeff Beck who was the lead player on ALL their famous tunes.
Then Jeff left, for his famous career (Truth, Rough & Ready, Blow by Blow, to this day!) and Jimmy Page took over the lead guitar reins. Led Zepplin's original name was "The New Yardbirds".

Eric 'Slowhand' Clapton was asked to join the Yardbird's in October 1963.

The Yardbirds then took over as the house band at the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond,
after The Rolling Stones left.

They recorded the famous "Five Live Yardbird's", a great album, featuring
'Smokestack Lightning'.

Later in March 1965, Mr. Clapton left, after not wanting to record the Hard Rock Pop Hit,
'For Your Love', as he felt it comprimised blues roots of The Yardbird's.

The boys then wanted 'Little' Jimmy Page to replace Eric Clapton, but Jimmy declined and
suggested his out of work friend Jeff Beck.

Jeff joined the band in April 1965, and by the end of the year Jeff really came into his own,
with the great guitar work on 'Shapes of Things', the ultimate 'psychedelic rock song'.

By mid-1966, Jimmy Page also joined the band, as a second lead guitarist. Later in the year,
Jeff Beck was fired, and Jimmy stayed with the rest of the boys, now as a 4-piece.

I saw The Yardbird's in August 1967, at The Village Theatre in New York. By then they were a 4-piece.

They were raw and loud. But, the lead singer -Keith Relf was completely fried.

Jimmy Page stood at 6' tall, but with the hair, he could have started on the New York Knicks as a
power forward.

The answer to why Clay went down is contained in Henry's autobiography, which I've managed to lose. The force of Henry's punch was measured using the latest in 1970s technology, at some research institute whose name I forget. The punch accelerated faster than a Saturn Moon Rocket, traveling at 35 mph after 5 1/2 inches, and landed with the equivalent of 3 tons per square inch. No man could stand before that punch.
