Where do you have this among the all time quit jobs?

It reminds me of Ali-Liston I, in that he was losing and taking some good licks but certainly not getting beat down yet. But Liston actually came out with an X-ray to prove his injury. In Chavez' case it seems almost like a worse, and more befuddling, quit job.

Did Chavez blame injuries or anything like that? What was his explanation?

I heard it was a broken rib... but I don`t focus too much on what happens between prime/fresh fighters vs past prime/shot fighters, it gives absolutely zero reflection of who was better, greater or how a fight would go between prime versions.... I see these fights as just a necessary but unfortunate part of the sport.

I don't see it as much reflection on a prime for prime match-up either, just curious why he quit when he didn't seem to be in such a bad way.

It was not a broken rib. With a broken rib you hardly breathe, let alone walk around. Cracked rib maybe.

I thought Chavez accidentally bit half his tongue off after an unexpected DLH uppercut. Video seemed to confirm this for me, as he has his mouth hanging open, having trouble articulating his injury.

IRRC, it bled like a lunatic. But I'm unsure where I got all this from, just nestled in my memory.

I just checked the end of the fight and it seems to be the case.

Thought is was a cut inside the mouth. I lost a lot of respect for him between this and the Randall thing

Hispanic pride kicked in. He was getting beaten very quickly in the fight, he figured he had no chance, and like Duran in the Leonard rematch, would rather end it than be humiliated and shown up for any longer. Chavez still doesn't care for Oscar.

Leonard was clowning against Duran, though, and himself reckons that's why Duran quit. Leonard says Duran was still in the match and had a chance to win it, but just couldn't stand being made fun of.

But Chavez was clearly losing and seemed to quit in order to avoid being stopped in a couple of rounds.

Duran's quit job, ridicolous as it is, seems more in line with his machismo image to me than Chavez'.

Chavez had a broken rib, fractured jaw, and a badass cut in his mouth. I don't put too much stock in the quit job.

"Retired" is a much better term.

I have a hard time calling any fighter a "quitter".

Knew he couldn't win or keep it respectable any longer, and would just be taking punishment futilely.

Not nearly as damning as the Randall quit job imo.

He said "cuts inside the lips are very very harmful". He also claimed his corner and the doctor stopped it :nut.

You have a good memory, because I was struggling to recall the details, but your mention of that incident does ring a bell now that I think of it.

I remember Chavez getting DLH all riled up and fighting stupid, but then DLH caught him with some big shots and one really seemed to bother Chavez a lot.
I do remember thinking at the time that the writing looked to be on the wall for Chavez after that, but it's risky trying to recall from memory.

You are right BE. That was after the Oscar rematch. Chavez started flipping out bigtime after the translator said "Te rajastes" which in spanish pretty much means "pussied out".
