Did these black HW's have a chance against Dempsey Circa 1927?

    Bearcat Wright

    Larry Gains

    George Godfrey

All of these fighters were very good fighters, but they never received title fights. How do you think they would have done against an aging Dempsey? Would they have been able to beat in 1927?

There is something very unsavoury about picking a guy to win who was protected by the colour line in the KKK era.

Godfrey and Gains might have had a chance, but they would probably loose.

Dempsey beat Jack Sharkey around this time, who had dismantled the best of the three in George Godfey.

What has that got to do with anything?

Perhaps Jack Dempsey was a wicked man who drew the colour bar for the most venal of reasons, but unfortunately he happened to be the greatest heavyweight of all time.

If that is the case, then you should say so.

You thought Godfrey was better than Gains? I tend to go with Gains, who beat Godfrey, Carnera, Schmeling and other good fighters of the era.

I've never insinuated that Jack Dempsey himself was a racist or a wicked man.

What i'm saying is that its a little unfair to the guys, who were never going to get a shot, to say "oh he'd beat them anyway", when unfair circumstances prevented them from ever having the chance to prove otherwise. Do you get what i'm saying?

You can't really say he was the greatest of all time. His opposition was actually pretty weak.

I'm just wondering what people thought of the three black fighters and how they would do against an aging Dempsey.

Unfair circumstances prevent a lot of fighters from getting shots. It's not just the colour line or the 1920s.

Fighters who don't hook up with the right managers and promoters don't get shots. Hundreds of fighters never got the opportunities.

Would it be wrong to pick Muhammad Ali over Eddie Machen or Duane Bobick just because they never got shots at him ?

A slight difference being Ali faced fighters who dominated those 2 conclusively proving he was the best of the era, where as Dempsey never proved himself the best of the era, poor example all things considered. You'd have been better off going with Larry Holmes

So who would Dempsey have to beat to prove he was better than Bearcat Wright ?

According to the transitive property the answer is Harry Greb. Greb over Walker, Walker over Wright.

    Yeah.

Incidentally, Jack Dempsey KO'd Bill Hartwell is 1 minute in 1931 in an 'exhibition'.

Bill Hartwell beat Bearcat Wright in 1927.

Of course, exhibitions don't count though.
