No I think the fans rate him so high because they have eyes.

He beat more ATG opponents than any heavyweight,he was the only 3 time lineal champion,he was never knocked out in his prime,he was a gold medal winner at the Olympics. What about him is overrated?

Who was better? There is a small case to be made about Joe Louis maybe but then again,Louis didn't have to fight Foreman,Frazier,Norton,Liston,Patterson etc

Ali never had to face a Prime Tyson who brutally destroyed a prime Larry Holmes.

Not on these boards he isn`t... in fact you`d be hard pressed to find anyone that rayes Ali as high as I do (top 5 p4p)... he`s not even a lock for no1 HW around here, he does get the no1 position more than any other but Joe Louise wins lot of votes as well.

    oibighead asks - `Name a heavyweight with a better resume`

dyna responds - `If light heavy counts: Archie Moore`

He didn't beat a prime Sonny Liston OR Floyd Patterson.. He fought Liston in his 30's while he was 22.. He cheated against Henry Cooper who had knocked him down by having his trainer tear his glove to stall time also had smelling salts to revive Ali..

Foreman and Frazier wins were good, but refused to fight Foreman in a rematch and lost to Joe one of the 3 times..

Got a gift decision against Ken Norton, was knocked down by bums like Chuck Wepner and claimed he had his toe stepped on.. Overall he is in my top 3 but not the greatest fighter to ever live.. If he was not as loud and hyping himself he would not be the icon he is now..

    *Serious mode for me now*
The third frazier win Ali was very lucky.
It might as well have been a draw.

Against foreman he was lucky again, loose ropes he was also hanging on foreman a lot of time, which costed foreman a lot of energy.
And foreman managed to stand up at the 8 count but the ref stopped the fight.

If there had been a rematch foreman had a very good chance to win.

Liston was older but coming off of first round KO wins and was never beaten like that. Ali beat Liston twice. Patterson was older as well but still good enough to beat guys like Chuvalo right? Patterson was 2 time champion with speed and power? Those are good wins.
Ali beat Foreman and there wasnt a rematch because Foreman lost to Jimmy Young and then retired. If Foreman beat Young, there would have either been a rematch or they would strip Ali. Simple as that.
And being knocked down means nothing. In heavyweight boxing, knockdowns will happen. Did Ali get up off the floor and beat Wepner by TKO? Yes he did.

Losing to Joe Frazier doesn't hurt someone's standings much because Joe was a great fighter as well.

So you are quite mistaken about Ali. And the things Ali did out of the ring are part of the reason he is such an icon.
So he beat a still good Patterson twice, beat s still very good Liston twice, beat Chuvalo, beat Norton, beat prime monster Foreman, beat Shavers, power punching Ron Lyle, beat Leon Spinks etc

Who has a better resume? Who is rated higher?

Ali is either #1 or #2. That's it. The only guy maybe better is Joe Louis.

Great post!He is truly an amazing character, and a great fighter but I do feel he is a tad over rated.Remember he got lucky in the 3rd fight with Fraser,,tried to quit but Joe's corner pulled him first. For pure boxing skill I feel he was limited.Constantly throwing the same 1-2.Incredible footwork tho, durable as ****.
A great fighter but not the best by some distance
