Exhibitions did not translate very well into Dempsey's language.

The punch that kod Sharkey was a left hook to the chin.
"He said I hit him when he wasn't looking, well what the hell, why aint you looking"?. "What was I supposed to do send him a post card?

    Jack Dempsey.

Joe Gans drew the line after Dave Holly according to Surf-Bat's article and he was considered one of the 'nice guys'.

Dempsey hit Sharey with a few hard uppercuts to the balls, Sharkey looked over to the ref to complain because he was in severe pain..and dempsey hit him with a left hook...

    Sharey DQ 7 Dempsey

Dempsey was an underrated quote machine.

Obviously a prime Dempsey beats them all, but we are not talking prime Dempsey here. I think Gains has a good chance of winning, and possibly Godfrey, too. We are talking about the 1927 Dempsey who wasn't on top of his game. Bearcat was a tough hombre who may have given Jack all he could handle at the time. IMO, Wright was better than Firpo, who put Jack down.

I could buy the idea that Godfrey or Gains would be a dangerous match for this version of Dempsey, but Wright was never realy in that class.

I agree, but that's not to say that he wouldn't have given an aging, unmotivated dempsey a good fight at that time. If Firpo did, why can't Wright? It should be noted that I am a biased fan of Bearcat.

"Sarcasm, sir." Sorry, I'm very sarcastic myself, but sometimes have a hard time recognizinig it in those I don't know as well.

"How come you get all the photo credits in Pollack's Sullivan book?" If I remember correctly, because I provided him with scans of many photos from a late 1800s book titled 'Gladiators of the Prizering.'

This thread was not made to hate on Dempsey. The man was a great champion. It was just made to gauge how others felt some of the competition would have done had they been given the chance.

B.S. The record book says Dempsey kos Jack Sharkey 7 rds July 21, 1927...
Look it up ...Sometimes the truth hurts...By you repeating the same
lie over and over ,doesn't make it the truth, but your agenda...S, get over
your hatred of Jack Dempsey, for he never hurt you...I wonder if the Manassa Mauler were alive and kicking ,would you spout the same vicious hatred against him...Somehow I doubt it....

Burt, you might want to look at the fight and not the record books. Dempsey did Sharkey dirty. Similar to the Mayweather-Ortiz fight.

SS, I have seen this fight so, so many times over the years...
I see dempsey half as fast as he was wearing down Sharkey with body blows, yes some were "borderline" shots but not once did the referee take a point away from Dempsey, or not ONCE did the referee disqualify Dempsey as when three years later the referee disqualified Sharkey in his title loss to Max Schmeling on a foul in 1930...Dempsey old and way past his peak took combinations early in the bout from an absolute prime Sharkey, but kept on hammering the stomache with dozens of body blows
until Jack Sharkey had to find a way out by complaining to the ref,and Dempsey's short left hook ended the show...In an an earlier round after the closing bell sounded, Dempsey was walking to his corner with huis hands at his side, and Sharkey cuffed him with a blow to the face...Dempsey
stoically never uttered a sound and complained...He Dempsey, gave no quarter and asked no quarter and went about his slow wearing down of a much younger Jack Sharkey...Sharkey in all the following years never griped about being fouled, but always INSISTED that Jack CheersDempsey was the best heavyweight ever til Sharkey's dying day in 1994...
