Rahman gets loads of chances because he made a name putting the lion to sleep, but isn't likely to repeat the feat vs Povetkin, or most top 20 HW's.
I really wish Rock got this shot on the Huck night - woulda been sleep time for Povetkin. Now i agree, doubt he makes the mistake again but he does not take punches well. At 1 point in the fight (hopefully early cause condition is a prob im certain) Rock will land a punch or 2. Its the last hurrah for Hasim.
He fought 4 unknowns and how does he get elevated to be the challenger? Don't get me wrong Hasim is a decent fighter with some good power if he uses it properly but how many chances has he had?
The Povetkin management is just being smart with their guy and that's why the waited for the delay. We the fans get this all the time and this is no different Heavyweights in real real tough bouts that have to dig deep to hang in there don't have A+ performances in their next bout. They are flat. What the smart corners do is to get an old name and old reflexes. A soft defense. What you seldom see is a youthful challenger or a hitter. But it is crucial to pretty much get an opponent Povetkin can beat with his B game right now. Hasim fits the bill to a T. What they don't want as an opponent is a hitter/a concrete chin/a top defensive guy/ or even a guy that would have to be systematically broken down. Then maybe go after a live body next--but not too dangerous--and then fight a top challenger in about a year. But they are walking a tightrope right now and their job is to get wins for Alex, not losses. A loss now and that's a major major rebuilding project.
POVETKIN done lined up Holyfield for his next fight. He's thinking ahead - he should ask the Lion about that nonsense.
Come on though, He's been pro for 8 years now, he should be at least be making some major steps by now?
Rahman by late KO...if Povetkin is overweight and Rahman is in shape. Most likely scenario. Povetkin by UD.
Rahman has eaten himself out of contention and has no chance. Even the Povetkin that showed up vrs. Huck will KO Rahman early and easy.
Povetkin fights Rahman late September, then Holy in Dec/Jan, then Wlad next Spring? I could see this happening but i thought Holy was fighting in Feb in South Africa.
I'd like to see Rock win, but he was over 265 pounds or somethin like that in one of his last fights.
If Rahman goes the distance, Povetkin should quit boxing immediately because it means that Wlad will simply murder him in the ring.
That is not what this fight is. It is a softie title defense against a name. It is not a stepping stone type of fight by any means. It is a bout carefully selected for the wear and tear factor. This is the type of matchup we the fans get; old names. If it wasn't Rahman, it would have been another old name with bad reflexes. Shannon Briggs & sell the fight on his Foreman win eons ago. Or Botha is a beatable guy that fits the bill. McCline or a Mike Grant. That way, Povetkin gets the results/makes $$$/comes out of the bout without wear and tear.
