    George Christian was black.

    Emmanuel Campbell was black.

I think Boston Bearcat was black also.

There is a big difference between fighting good black fighters and black tomatoe cans though.

I am convicting of Dempsey of facing one fighter of color on his record. You are contending there is an invisible, magical record which holds more opponents. You are asking me to prove the negative, that he did NOT face other fighters of color. I am asking you to prove that he DID, positive. And yes, I am being half-assed contrarian.

That's not a spoon you are holding, chief. That's a shovel.

Finally, we have a winner... tho all three were pre-Lester Johnson... when Dempsey got the fear in him.

That is because Harry Wills refused to fight the top white contenders. He was the second highest paid fighter of the era and second biggest draw and he wasnt risking that status for anyone.

He fought Fulton, only after Fulton had been kod in a single round by Dempsey. He only agreed to meet Gunboat Smith after he had been kod early by Dempsey, Fulton and Greb and was coming off a loss to Bob Martin in 3. That is a discrace to make that fight.

He fought Bartley Madden only after Madden had been beaten by guys like Miske, Greb, Levinsky, Brennan, Weinert, Gibbons and Fulton. Most of whom were Dempsey victims or top white contenders avoided by wills. He fought Firpo only after Firpo was wrecked and Kod By Dempsey, even then, we have all heard the arguments about firpo being overated andmanufactured challenger.

He did fight Sharkey and Uzcuden, but we all know how those fights turned out and it wasnt as good as Dempseys foray with JL Johnson.

Wills ducked Greb, Miske, Brennan, Gibbons, Tunney (openly), Willard, Carpentier. I also notice that he ducked Tony Ross and Sandy Ferguson or Frank Moran, all three of whom KOd the man the man that Knocked out Wills in two rounds in 1912. He Ducked Colin Bell who drew with Sam Langford, the man who knocked out Wills on more than one occassion. He ducked Bob Devere, who drew with Sam McVey, shortly after McVey beat Wills.

Even in defending his coloured title, i dont see title shots being given to the two most dangerous fighters Jack Johnson and George Godfrey. Both of whom were pretty openly ducked by Wills. To be fair, i suppose the commissions didnt want him to defend against the best Coloured fighter, Jack Johnson but i didnt really see any photos of Wills signing to fight Johnson.

Of course last but not least Wills didnt fight Dempsey even though Dempsey signed to fight him. He can be forgiven for that one though. Why would he want to fight Dempsey, and risk everything by being exposed and KOd by Dempsey. He could draw 80,000 people to watch him fight the likes of Firpo. And full stadiums against other easier opponents. Fight Dempsey and win, and he also gets a full stadium, no extra money. Fight Dempsey and lose and he get zero pay from then on. I can see why he ducked Dempsey and most of the top white fighters.

This is from page 6 of the odgden standard examiner on 4 August 1952.

It is impossible to tell, but boston Bearcat sure does sound like a white pimp to me! Of interest from that note also is that there is two more first round KOs to credit Dempsey with, and both of them are from before his documented professional debut! I think Dempsey might be reaching out from the grave and chasing that record of 1 round KOs supposedly held by Shannon Briggs.

Dempsey also recalled a fight r expecting with the Boston Bearcat Dempsey lowers are expecting kayoed Bearcat in one round Bearcat tossed silver dollars to Ogden kids in those said Dempsey The Bearcat dressed m a derby hat wore spats long pants and a unique coat His shirt was loaded with pearl buttons He also trotted up and down the streets with a fancy cane This was way back in 1916 three years before I won the heavyweight championship of the j world
That's a break for the club which hasn't been drawing and with Gabe Paul ing of cutting down all the way been a good fight town When boxed Terry Keller and The ton Bearcat we packed em in From what I can gather since ar- riving here Friday's fight will draw one of the biggest gates in western boxing history The one time king of the weights recalls one of his biggest thrills of 1913 This happened at the old Manhattan Club in Salt Lake City Believe it or not this corner was in the press row as a cub Dempsey at the time weighed only 156 pounds He fought the second preliminary for Hardy K Downing Dempsey floored his Op- ponent in 15 seconds In those days Downing promoted and served as referee of all of his fights He always had one or two standby bouts in of em was a stinker This particular night Downing asked Dempsey to stand by Late on the program a stinker and the two boxers were chased from the ring Downing called upon Dempsey a second time and Jack proceeded to flatten his new opponent in 25 seconds Thus Dempsey stopped two opponents in just 40 seconds a Utah boxing record But here is the payoff Dempsey was paid only for each of the bouts or a total of And believe me that was a lot of money in those said Dempsey Knd that sum of money bought a lot of ham and eggs Dempsey will speak to Ogden

26 April 1915. REno evening Gazette - here is the Dempsey Campell report.

Emmanuel Campbell a bis colored tok an awful beating from Jack Dempsey and finally quit cold after running to avoid punishment He fell to the floor in the fourth round after turning his back and running around the ring After tak ing the count of eight he got off his knees and when Dempsey made an- other rush at him dropped back to the floor Referee Moore de- clared Dempsey the winner showed great and and has a punch with either hand that makes him a dangerous op- ponent In the first preliminary Frankie Kane got the decision over Kid reia Kane had too much reach for although the latter made a and willing battle

Thus begins and ends the career of an 0-1 fighter.

But, oh, I forgot his magical, invisible record.

I talked to a historian about Emanuel Campbell. "Big" fighter right? He was actually only 160-170lb

I was refering to recorded, listed, black fighters.
Lord Tywin beat me to it. Emanuel Campbell and Boston Bearcat were apparently black, and George Christian was described in some reports as a colored fighter.

But there are numerous other names on his record that I have no idea whether they are black or white.
I don't assume anything about most of them.
