It's very rare for anyone to face another top three guy in their division, since that's usually a unification fights because there are four major belts in a division. So no, he's not faced a "dearth" of top three guys. He's faced the normal amount and maybe more. He came back from retirement and immediately faced the number 2 in the division.
If Vitali fought in a good era he wold have been down. He fought mostly bad opponents in a weak era. Does he have a good chin? How many times was he hit in the chin? Sanders,Lewis rocked him. Arreola had him running. He turned his back on the unrelenting Chisora. Vitali has a good chin yes,but not as good as Ali's chin,Foreman,Holyfield.
