You have some points as always. The thing about H2H with Roy for me at his peak, is first finding a fighter that is gonna make him need a plan B.. If its not broke, why fix it? I also thought he showed some adjustments in the first Griffin fight, I understand Griffin isn't HOF material, but he was very good at his best with an awkward style. He certainly changed his plan altogether in the second fight. I also think we have to give Roy credit for digging down, and showing great heart in Tarver 1... I had a draw at the end of round 10. Roy showed great heart and determination to pull a close win, over the #1 LHW, in his very next fight after dropping from HW.. The list of fighters that can drop from HW and beat the man at LHW is very short, I can only name Joey Maxim off the top of my head. I know we will always disagree that Roy's chin was complete glass in his prime.. I don't think it was Iron, but not near as bad as it was after Tarver cracked it.:deal
Head, I respectfully disagree had Calzage not taken his foot off the gas in the 10th, 11th, and 12th rounds he would have KOed Jones. He just chose to school, taunt, and clown Jones instead. Either way it was a total masterclass performance by Super Joe Calzaghe.
I have to run to the gym but I give Jones full credit for the Hopkins and Toney wins. They are very good scalps. But, my problem is after that he didn't do very much he didn't make the big fights happen. His career is left with a lot of questions and woulda, coulda, shoulda type arguments. I don't dislike Roy the problem I have is he NEVER showed us what he truly could have done in the Ring. HBO management even made the same point they gave Jones that sweet lucrative deal because they mistakenly though he would deliver big fights. Instead he manipulated HBO and fought a bunch of Mandatory fights instead. We never got to see what Jones was really capable of and it is a damn shame. Maybe he would have beat all those guys, maybe he would have won some and lost some but we will never know.....
I thought Calzaghe let Jones see the bell as well.. Roy never entered this fight really believing he was gonna win.. Heck, he didn't even try to finish Calzaghe, or even throw a punch sometimes when his hands were down.. He was even singing his rap song in Joe's ear changing the lyric from 45-0 to 46-0..atsch I was one hoping Roy could pull off the upset and have one more great fight, I knew deep down though it was a false hope. Calzaghe and Jones were on different levels at that point. Roy was lucky he even got this fight. They both wanted to cash it out, which is fine... but really, what meaning did it have?? There were certainly better fights for Joe.:yep
I can't disagree that I wanted to see him fight some more guys.. Though I think he still has some great wins. Even DM, or Benn.. Two winnable fights IMO that would eliminate some of the doubt people have.:yep
Had Jones fought even just those two and won there really isn't much the critics could say. Both would have been very legit and good names on his resume. :good
yeah i think you are right, calzaghe decided just to toy with jones in 10,11,12 for a couple of reasons 1 - calzaghe had a ton of respect for roy (not only as a boxer but also for sharing the promotion and the easy negotiation) and didn't want to brutalize him with 471 unanswered slaps in the corner. 2) calzaghe knew this was his last ever fight and was savouring the moment, fighting in MSG and putting on an exhabition of world class skills, bamboozling roy with sizzling combinations, flamboyant defence, and mouth-watering footwork. calzaghe wanted to enjoy himself in the last 3 rounds of his career.
There's more doubt surrounding the The Welsh Rabbit's career than Jones'...:deal Joe actually fought the LOSER of an elimination bout...LOL
Jones has made adjustments before vs Eric Harding. Harding took Jones' left hook away and was outboxing for quite a few stretches early on. Jones stops trying to hit Harding in the head with the left hook ,and deliberately attacks Harding's right shoulder and arm. Eventually tearing Harding's biceps and forcing the stoppage. vs Griffin(1st)- Griffin has a ton of success counterpunching Roy as he tries to lead with the left hook from too far out and backing him up. Roy closes the range and catches Griffin as he leans back. He had him figured out and ready to go before the DQ. He finishes up this strategy in the 2nd fight where he closed the gap and landed the left hook at will, feinting Griffin out of position for the left hook that KO'd him
This is a completely logical and irrefutable post.:yep:deal Calzaghe chose not to stop Jones for these reasons.
Calzhage chose not to fight Jones until he was brutally ko'd TWICE.. Joe knew his limitations...too bad his sad fans don't.. The Welsh Rabbit hid in WBO land fighitng the likes of Tokker Pudwell while Toney...RJJ...and Hopkins were taking care of grown-folks business..deal
Meaningless. Calzaghe also got dropped by an old Hopkins and came close to losing...some people argue that he did lose. Calzaghe's best win is Kessler.
