http://www.***********.com/michael-dokes-former-champ-passes-away-54--56001 What is your best memory of Dokes? Mine is: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKrmsQhewhI[/ame] Underrated fighter. Motivated and in shape he could have been a great boxer.
RIP. A lot of the 80's heavies have died, Leroy Jones, Scott LeDoux, Trevor Berbick, Anders Eklund, James Broad, Leroy Boone, Jeff Sims, Greg Page and now Dokes.
Sorry to here this. I always will remember the war with Holyfield, arguably the best Heavyweight fight of the 80s.
My pick for the greatest waste of talent from the 80's. I have misgivings over some of his personal actions, so I can't be all broken up. RIP
fantastic... btw IF that fight would have been filmed 70 years ago or more it would have looked like mostly grabbing and holding, see the diff 'proper' fiming makes. R.I.P champ.
Michael Dokes died of liver cancer at age 54. He was a former WBA champ with tremendous handspeed. He had drug problems, but got his act together and got into fantastic shape for an awesome war with Evander Holyfiled, one of the best fights you'll ever see. He probably won more fans in that loss than in all his prior wins. I met him when I was a kid, after that wonderful fight, but I think after he had been brutally KO'd by Razor Ruddock. He was nice to me and took a photo with me.
He was ultimately a waste of talent but I think he redeemed himself against Holyfield, where he fought with heart that had he'd lacked in his other fights and his training. RIP champ.
It's sort of a strange memory I have of one of Dokes' fights but I have to relate it. When he fought Jesse Ferguson, I watched it live over the USA Tuesday night fights. At the end of the fight before the decision is announced Ferguson goes over to Dokes corner and says something and walks away. Dokes turns and although a mic isn't close to him you can clearly see him mouthing the words, "Your mother!" Game on, they go at it in the ring again and they need to be separated. It was just so funny at the time.
