Sorry Flea Man,just looked up Mikes record and as he fought Sumbu before Bomber guess he must have been at or near prime. But Mike won a return. Also reminded me,as id forgotten, that he beat Jeff Harding a weight above, and I do remember,Jeffs battles with Denis Andries,a real tough guy.
Seem to recall he was avoided for a long time before he became champion, also.

Hey, I love Mike! The rematch with Sumbu was very close and one of my alltime favourite fights. Could've gone either way but that's only because these were two of the most gifted and technically astute middleweights of any era. Love that era, so does Atberry, hence why I'm a big fan of his posts :good

Kalambay was the best at slipping and countering in boxing history, for me.

Hence why the praise Floyd Mayweather often receives gets my blood boiling. Sumbu shits all over him.

You'll love it. Kalambay dominates the undefeated McCallum in one of the best displays I have ever seen. You'd never have predicted that on paper!

Havent read the entire thread yet, but straight off the top of the big scottish dome Gary Jacobs deserves a mention.

Gary fought the at the time no1 p4p in the world Pernell Whittaker, AND floored him before losing courageously on points, hitting the canvas himself exhausted at the end, but still getting back up to go the distance.

Giving the p4p no1 at the time such a tough fight earns Gary Jacobs the right to be mentioned in this thread if you ask me:smoke

I liked Jacobs, he was an honest fighter, but McGirt showed his level. A very solid European level fighter.

I spoke in depth to a guy who claimed he was there at the fight many years ago (a Welshman who had been living in America & Newbury England for decades ) and he said that was a myth , i also asked a fella who fought Rocky Marciano as an amature (a fella who has only just this month died ) by the name of Dr Jack Mathews (Rip Doc ) and he told me Farr had lost a close but clear fight , he also told me the story about Louis asking Farr what all the scars on his body were about ( blue coal face scars kind of like indian ink blue lines if you have ever seen them ) and Farr's trainer said they were a result of Tommy fighting tigers in the moutains of Wales , Joe turned and went all quiet apparently . so sadly i personally don't think Tommy beat Joe as much as i would like it to be true .
