Who have fought Tougher Opposition. Oscar or Ali?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by JustBumpingthis, Aug 14, 2012.

  1. Looking at Oscar's resume. It is shocking how many tough fights he took.

    Trinidad,Quartey,Vargas,Mosley x2
Pacquaio, Mayweather (when he was well past it for both)

    The MW'S

    Prime Sturm, Prime Hopkins.

Even Mayorga was a tough scrap at the time. Did he actually fight tougher opposition then Ali?

  2. Another thing of note.

The Vast Majority of the fighters Oscar fought were in their primes.

Saddam Ali is a glass chin breeding mofo waiting to get ktfo.

How can you even compare Oscar to Saddam Ali who hasn't done jack shiit yet.

Oscar did fight a lot of great fighters. But I give Ali the edge. Nice poll.

Nothing Oscar did beats Ali facing Liston.

Also my favourite round of any fight ever was that 6th round.

Oscar fought 6 future or current #1 p4p fighters. He may have a top 5 ATG opponent list.

Seeing as Ali fought 5 of the top 20 heavyweights he wins imo

    Ali Top 10:

    Foreman
    Frazier
    Liston
    Holmes
    Norton
    Patterson
    Terrell
    Quarry
    Bonavena
    Lyle

(you can argue over who should be 6-10)

    De La Hoya Top 10:

    Mayweather
    Pacquaio
    Trinidad
    Hopkins
    Whitaker
    Mosley
    Quartey
    Chavez
    Molina
    Vargas

P4P, there is clearly more depth to Oscar's resume, especially when you factor in that he probably peaked at 140lbs. Ali obviously ranks higher ATG, but Oscar faced the tougher competition. Ali fought a who's who of heavyweights, while De La Hoya fought a who's who from 130-160.

Can any other fighter realistically make that claim?

I left out Moore (and Foster) for that matter because while they were ATG light-heavies, they weren't exceptional at heavy (especially at Moore's age). You could arguably take out Chavez for DLH, depending on how far past his prime you feel he was at the time.

For example, Oscar gets credit for fighting Hopkins well above his natural weight. Prime Hopkins is a tough match-up for most middleweights in history, but far too much for a naturally smaller fighter. There is little credit for beating Camacho, because even though he was brilliant at 130, he was an average welterweight when Oscar faced him.
