Report: Ricky Hatton Going to Announce Return to the Ring


Former welterweight champion Ricky Hatton is reportedly on the cusp of announcing his return to boxing after being away from the ring for over three years, according to The Boxing Observer.

Hatton officially retired from boxing in July of 2011 but ended his career by going 2-2 in his last four bouts—his two losses came at the hands of the best boxers of the last decade, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, both ending in knockouts.

Although the only two losses of his 47-fight career were at the hands of Mayweather and Pacquiao, Hatton looked like a shell of his former self towards the end of his career and could be making a huge mistake by coming back to the ring.

Turning 34 on October 6th, ring rust from his three-year hiatus will surely come into play, as he won't be able to bounce back as quickly as say a 25-year-old could.

Hatton (45-2, 32 KO) is said to have been getting back into fighting shape over the past month and has his own boxing gym in Manchester, England that would make a return a real possibility.

The only bright spot in Hatton's potential comeback is that he has beaten everyone he has faced except the best-of-the-best, so it is possible for Hatton to be successful in the ring if he steers clear of both Mayweather and Pacquiao.

The report states that Hatton's return bout could be in November in the U.K., which would be a smart place to come back for Hatton—as the home town crowd could help Hatton be more comfortable in his return to the ring.

With rumors of a possible British star showdown in the making (per The Guardian), Hatton has been linked to rumors of a fight with fellow Brit and former world champ, Amir Khan.

Khan (26-3, 18 KO) is coming off of a shocking knockout loss to Danny Garcia in Las Vegas this past July and is looking for a big name to reinstate his name in the sport.

A possible Hatton-Khan showdown would be a huge draw in the U.K., as both fighters are huge stars in their native country. Both fighters have big enough names to draw major interest from fans worldwide as well, making a comeback for Hatton worth it for a fight with Khan alone.
