....would RJJ have been MORE criticized for avoiding legit competition?

Assume he had never fought Hopkins and TOney and instead fought Benn and Dariusz.

If he fought them in addition to Toney and Hopkins no-one would criticise him. Which is a shame as Jones was capable of beating them all

hopkins and Toney are better fighters so are better W's.

Couldve and shouldve fought Benn and DM though.

Dariusz never wanted to come to America to fight. WTF would Jones ever think of going to Gemany when he had the majority of the titles?

Hopkins gave him one hell of a fight. probably his toughest. besides his losses of course.

Toney and Hopkins are the two better wins from that group..

Though out of fights that didn't happen for Roy, DM and Benn are the top two I wanted to see, and it seems he gets the most criticism for them. I think he would have beaten both, and it sure would have brought his legacy up quite a bit.

If all of those happened and became a Jones victory, he'd be higher on the ATG list.

Correct me if i'm wrong but those guys had to come to the U.S. to fight Roy and if they weren't willing to do that, it's not on Roy. I mean hello Seoul 88? He was "the man" and he didn't have to go to anyone's backyard and get robbed.

    RJJ,

    Great thread!

I've had this debate many times. If he'd have beaten Benn, Eubank, Collins, DM, etc but hadn't have fought Toney and Hopkins, he'd get so much abuse on here. He'd be accused of ducking them both, and his resume would be pulled apart. Toney and Hopkins are better than all of the fighters that he missed.

    Regards, Loudon.

Cheers, I agree. There is always the other debate of "A beats B does mean A beats C" but achievement wise, any reasonable poster would have beating Hopkins and Toney above the very respectable names of Benn, Eubank, Collins and DM.
    I love Benn but no.

he'd get more respect from british fans, but he;d get a lot less respect from US fans.Obviously he lives in the USA so he needs to bring money to the table by appeasing their fans.

Not sure if Toney is better than Eubie and Benn, I think Darius might be better than Toney at LH? But without a doubt Hopkins is better than these eurochaps, so beating Hopkins and Toney > beating Darius and Benn.

If only Toney Benn and Eubank had been more willing to unify, thats what I would have liked to have seen in retrospect.

And yes, Roy would beat both Benn and Eubank most days of the year.

Yes of course Hopkins & Toney are better fighters & more legit wins but here`s an idea.... & this might sound bat **** crazy BUT what if Roy actually managed to fight ALL FOUR in his career ? imagine that **** ? :yikes
