This is not right.

 

Hold your horses. The current plans look like this:

- For the 1st season only, APB will accept current professional boxers with limited terms and conditions
- APB boxers will be able to compete in the Olympic Games with limited terms and conditions

Current professional boxers eligibility for APB
- Current professional boxers who have a record of competing in AIBA events by representing AIBA National Federations
- Boxers who turned Pro within last 2 years
- Boxers who competed less than 10 or 15 bouts
- In exceptional cases, APB can consider to accept some boxers who can add much value to APB
- Total number of current professional boxers should be less than 20% of total APB boxers


APB Boxers Eligibility for the Olympic Games
a. Olympic Eligibility
- Age limit is from 19 – 34 years old
- Any AIBA (AOB) boxer who turned to APB within last 3 years
- All boxers from current professional organizations will not be eligible
- All APB boxers registered in their National Federations

The bold/italic paragraph above excludes "true" professionals from the olympics. (You just cannot take anything that comes out of AIBA/Wu's mouth at face value.) By AIBA definitions, an APB boxer is a professional and that's where the sports biggest stars will come from in their minds. AIBA's goal is to be the only pro organization out there.

Still, it's AIBA's intentions that I have listed and things aren't set in stone at all. I suspect the question about olympic eligibility will be up in the air for a while which will turn off many professionals that are otherwise sympathetic to the idea, from entering APB.

 

One point of view i've read, it gives amateur stars from obscure countries without pro development a chance of making something of their sport.

 

What other current professional organizations are there? The WBC/IBF/WBA/WBO arn't current professional organizations. They just saction championships.

 

But that is what is meant with other organizations. Or perhaps it's athletic commissions in america and their european counterparts etc. Either way, you are exclusively APB or you're out.

 

So from what it looks like then more likely prospects or unranked fighters are eligible? Maybe journeymen under 34?

 

Can they validate what organizations it also includes? Lets say for example James DeGale or David Price, amateurs from 2008 who have had under 15 or so fights, are they eligible?

 

They might become eligible if they ask for it and APB decides to bend the rules, which they explcitly say that they can (odd, I know). What makes them non-eligible is that have been professionals for more than 2 years when the next (first) season starts.

Yawn, not this **** again. No you will not see pro fighters at the Olympics, unless they're with APB.

 

Pros don't belong in the Olympics. It was always an amateur tournament in all events. They are wrecking the Olympic legacy.

Top pro boxers won't do it, anyway, they'll be more concerned with pro glory and big purses. Rather, it would attract the past it, faded stars and those who never quite made it to the top.

Pro's aren't going to box for no money for a whole year and risk their careers, all so they can fight in the Olympics.

 

Ah, I see. Thanks. There are conditions and most pros wouldn't be eligible.

Still, I don't like the idea of any pro stepping back into what has traditionally been an amateur tournament. That said, there could be positive benefits for the sport. I don't know. I'll have to look into it more deeply.
