I ask myself this all the time.. why did Dougles not offer tyson a rematch ? I think he didnt because, he knew he got lucky and he was scared of tyson.. Lets all admight it.. Buster fought a great fight but when tyson knocked him down, the ref gave a long count What are your thoughts on why the rematch didnt happen ?
A few days after Tokyo, Tyson & Douglas appeared in the studio with Larry Merchant. Throughout the conversation, Tyson gave Douglas credit for his performance, but also stated that he wanted an immediate rematch & that he would take out Douglas quick in a rematch. There can be NO doubt Tyson desperately wanted a rematch. When Merchant pressed Douglas about his thoughts on a rematch, James wasn't as enthusiastic as Mike about it, saying something like, "Well I have to see where I go from here". In facing Holyfield, Douglas only saw $24,000,000. Nothing else. And that's why he was fat & out of shape against Evander. Tyson would have done Douglas in the rematch. There'd have been no messing around - he have trained properly for 3 months solid. Douglas knew this!
Douglas is probably the biggest underperformer in boxing ever. He was lazy and he now had the money to life lazy. A guy who had the tools but never really used them.
Great vid. The ref gave both douglas and tyson the same count. I think a rematch would have been interesting between tyson and douglas. Tyson definatley wanted a rematch and although i feel Tyson would have done a lot better, there was no guarantee he would have won.
I feel a little embarrased to say this now (as a big boxing fan) but i had always thought for years there was at least some credibility to the "long count" theory. That video should end it all, the counts were virtually identical.
It had a lot to do with a dispute between King and Steve Wynn.King tried to get an injunction top stop Buster fighting Holyfield but apart from that it's pretty self explanatory. King and Sulaiman thought they had done everything to prevent an upset i.e incompetent judges and a referee they thought was friendly, but as for the long count,Douglas only responded to the referee's count.King even tried to have him banned and threatened not to pay his expenses. He was finished after that. Plus King got $3m step aside money.
