Lloyd Marshall beats Freddie Mills like a drum. Video courtesy of The Great A.Thanks to him.:good [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-PtbswvJbs&feature=related[/ame]
After that left hook, Mills is actually boxing a ghost for a moment Old Marshall, eh? Looks not bad does he.
WTF?!? How have I not seen this before? Or have I and just forgotten?! Either way thanks McCvey for another great find and thanks to TheGreatA for another great upload :good Confirms to me that Marshall probably had the most shoddy chin out of The Murderers Row. But arguably the biggest puncher as well. Made my day!
Indeed. Sadly we only have him from later in his career but throughout his career it failed him. I can let the Charles one slide obviously. That happened to stouter chins than Lloyd's and in a shootout between two gunslingers it's always the lesser chinned man that gets blasted...well, usually. I don't think Marshall was made out of china but out of those guys he seems the weaker of the bunch. The Ol' Mongoose was always hurtable as well but we have footage of him taking shots from much bigger men than Marshall. Even if he does go down/get stopped himself in pretty much all of 'em
Marshall wasn't hurt by Hucks. Falling against the ropes and bouncing back up while trying to catch his befuddled opponent was a trick he used to do. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-ZYtVZUTSg[/ame] You can see him trying to pull it off again on an old Tommy Farr: http://www.britishpathe.com/video/carmarthen/query/Farr http://www.itnsource.com/shotlist/BHC_RTV/1950/12/07/BGU412030037/?s=* I don't think he had a terrible chin necessarily, he just invited being hit and more often than not got away with it. The only person who stopped Marshall around his prime was a 10 lbs heavier Jimmy Bivins in the 13th round once Marshall tired.
He did look on rubber legs there though. Wasn't Hucks Belgian or French or summat? I've never looked into him, mate you could put that bout into perspective for me TGA?
Marshall was very old and Hucks was terrible. Marshall was absolutely not hurt at all and gave Hucks a trashing, knocking him down seven times. He was just crazy and used to pull off tricks like that in the ring. The most daring style of all, in my estimation.
I know it's a lazy comparison but his left hand, hands down and mainly reflexive style does remind me of Jones.
A Roy Jones of the Montell Griffin rematch, maybe. Although Jones was never daring enough to try and walk down opponents with his hands down. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jocc7aLC-X4[/ame] I feel that much like Tony Canzoneri, he represents the relatively rare group of aggressive counter-punchers, if such a term can be used, the likes of whom would pressure their opponents and create the opportunities to counter by inviting opponents to hit their seemingly unprotected chin, instead of laying back and waiting for the opponent to make the mistakes. Of course Marshall was more than content to initiate the exchanges if the opponent was not willing to do so, as he did against Charles in the first round of their filmed fight by ripping left hooks to his body and dropping him (with Charles later returning the favour).
As I say, a few similarities. As for your aggressive counter punchers I agree wholeheartedly. Who would you say was the least resistant of The Row?
atsch Tsc. Got me there. Dangerous stuff. Could hurt him in the cards. Not that he seemed to care about points considering how aggressively he fought. He was dropped a lot early in his career wasn't he?
