Bernard Hopkins 156 lbs vs Floyd Mayweather Jr 150 lbs

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by Classic Boxer, Aug 17, 2012.

  1. Who would win if the Bernard Hopkins that knocked out Oscar De La Hoya fought the Floyd Mayweather that outpointed De La Hoya in 2007?

Regardless of the weight difference fight night, only six pounds would be seperating them at the weigh in. Who do you think would win?

Floyd would probably outbox him unless Hopkins landed a lucky one....like he did with DLH.

Do you think it was lucky? I thought it was a great shot, a body shot we dont see often.

Hopkins beats him up. Too much size, too much savvy.

Man, Oscar was doing really well vs Bernard and he gassed. Floyd doesn't tend to gas late, and is a much better mover than Oscar...but Bernard would eat Floyd alive in the clinches with the dirty fighting.

Floyd's chin is pretty solid, so I assume the weight won't bother him that much in terms of punches, though it would allow Bernard to be more physical in moving Floyd where he'd want to at times.

Hopkins specializes in a style that focuses a lot on two things; moving laterally to offset and opponent's angle, and expert inside fighting. Since Bernard would likely anticipate both Floyd's counter-punching ability and his ability to pressure, he'd fight patiently without being too offensive, but at times trying to make Floyd lead. One thing about Floyd is that his guard is so effective, you can't stay long in the pocket before he lands hard counters and settles into a rhythm of hitting and not getting hit. What Hopkins does so well though is neutralizing his opponent's return fire by stepping to the side after getting off on the inside, or tying up to his advantage. I think it's a good tactical fight in which Bernard takes a decision by baiting Floyd before ambushing him repeatedly to outwork him and occasionally walk him into a shot.

I generally agree with what you're saying, but I think a prime DLH circled better at WW and 154 than Floyd did. I would have liked to see another "version" of DLH-Hopkins, interesting match-up leading up to the KO.

at the weigh in and then Bernard would gain another 10-15 pounds on the day of the fight and Floyd would stay the same

Yeah, he had plenty of time to land such a punch. Did it go 9 rounds? Can't remember but it was near the 9th if not the 9th.

Floyd barely moves at 147 and above, and he does not have better legs than Oscar at any point above 135 nor as good of combinations at junior middleweight to keep Hopkins at bay like Oscar did :nono

Hopkins outboxes Floyd badly. Too much size. Hell almost 5/6 inches in height and a good reach too.

Yeah right, Floyd had a bit of trouble with De La Hoya. The Bouie Fisher trained Hopkins would have made mincemeat out of Mayweather.

It's called being carried before the dive takes place.
