So you're saying that Lewis didn't want to fight Vitali because he thought Vitali was some one hit wonder who would fade out?
Lewis said himself that he could beat Vitali a 2nd time, IF he could have done that then he would have retired with even more money than he has now, AND having beat another HOFer twice... If Lewis truely believed that he could have beaten Vitali then he would have taken the fight, anything else doesn't make sense..

 

come on Dano, he was 38 for cripes sake. You want him to rematch a stand-in? Vitali was far from a HOFer - hes only just becoming a HOFer now.


Nearly everyone is retired from the HW championship at that age after a long career. Give the man a break. He said he wanted a rematch in the heat of the moment, but his body said different.

I am just saying that he obviously retired because he didn't have confidence in beating Vitali a 2nd time.. But he was almost 38 and was past it so retiring was the right choice.

It would have been tough had he lost to Vitali, then having to train a massive amount to get back to his postprime in order to win a 3rd fight. Thats probably 2 or 3 times the normal effort in training thathe was used to when he was young, but with only half the willpower. It s just way too much for a man with one eye on Jamaican skies.

Vitali lost the fight, technically.


Vitali made Lewis look so bad he blamed it on his being out-of-shape and showed him to

be very beatable.


After being denied a rematch Vitali then went on and won the title eliminator putting him line for a rematch with Lewis


In January the WBC gives Lewis a March deadline to sign for a rematch with Vitali before

they strip him of his title


Lewis retires in February of that year.
