Pea has some of the best lateral movement I've seen in a fighter, along with superb upper body movement which allowed fighters to fall in on him on the inside, where he's very effective. I see Pac being competitive but Pea is just too good.

So Pea was just too much for him because he had lateral movement...

The lateral movement is one of several things Whitaker had that would trouble Pac.

Dude, this thread has accomplished its goal. You're the only one who keeps an argument going for Pac.

Everyone else that's replied to the thread has pretty much unanimously picked Pernell and gave good reasons for picking him.

Being the aggressor gives the opponent the advantage when it comes to ring generalship. That's why it's usually described that the "puncher" or "come-forward" fighter against a quicker mover has to put in the work; as one comes forward, it gives the defending fighter a second in advance to time that rush and side-step. It's also what makes the best pressure-fighters in history so admirable, when they're able to consistently cut the ring off and remain unpredictable regardless of that disadvantage. Manny isn't a conventional swarmer, and won't be able to use his angles as well against another southpaw. He usually gets the drop on fighters by sticking his lead foot on the outside of theirs, or stepping all the way out the other side, and blitzing; there is no "outside" against Whitaker, so it's back to setting things up with the jab and working off conventional counters. Manny has shown an underrated jab against other southpaws, but who's going to win that war in this case? Whitaker, without a doubt, on the outside. Then, as I said, his upper body movement has many fighters who lunge (like Pac) fall in onto him, body to body; on the inside Manny simply holds awkwardly or does a weak repetition of uppercuts as he turns out of it. Whitaker, however, has competed very well on the inside with the best of them, and would exploit this flaw similarly to the way Marquez did, as they are of similar height, and regardless, Whitaker likes to fight from a low center of gravity at times. Manny has great foot-speed and feints fairly well, so he'll give a good fight, but I have to pick Whitaker.

Pea is just as bad of a stylistic nightmare for Marquez than he is to Pacquiao.

    Pea schools them both.

Pea wouldn't be clowning around against Pac, thats for sure.

He'd be there fully focused like he was against Chavez.

    Pretty much this.

If Pea clowned around, Pacquiao absolutely has the attributes to give him fits.

If he's 100% focused and in a mean, win at all costs mode, he schools Manny in every facet of the game, and wins atleast 9 rounds.

Better jab. Better skills. Better movement. And he's in with a guy who has a severe aversion to all three of those things.

A consistent jab, good boxing, and constant feinting movement can often take Pacquiao off his mythical perch and make him look ordinary. See Marquez, Tim Bradley, Barrera II. Pernell is one of the best ever at all three categories.

Manny is an ATG and head to head incredibly potent against sluggers and come forward fighters. Against the best of the boxers? It's just stylistic toxin to him.
