I like that size is used as an argument in favor of a pre-1920 fighter to demonstrate that the small Dempsey accomplished an amazing feat. Effectively using the size argument to inflate the reputation of an undersized heavyweight.

Dempsey was a great, and suited to the era he was great in. I don't think these things automatically extend across generations.

If you knock out the best fighter in teh world, as quick as Dempsey did0, then that is a very good result in any era. If you do the same to so many of the top contenders like Dempsey did then that makes you very good in any era. If you then go on to hold your world title for 7 years, fighting very good, if not the absolute best contenders at a time when nobody realistically thought anyone was in your class, then that makes you an all time great. And finally, when you to get old and unfocussed, if you still fight the very best and still manage to beat the top contenders by KO (Sharkey) or last the distance when outgunned by another all time great (Tunney), then that makes you an all time great, in any era. I think such a record does extend across generations. It certainly did when a similar fighter such as Tyson came along. And it also has done so with fighters with lesser records (but arguably other great qualities and strengths in careers) such as Lewis, Holyfield and Klitchsko came alng.

I think greatness transcends in other great eras.

holding the title for 7 years, that's a bs achievement as he spent 3 of those outside the ring.
