Yes but my point was that was the technical mistake he made that caught up to him the quickest as he slowed. Jones was very good in the center of the ring and keeping himself in a safe range in close and at distance, but against the ropes was always a bad place and got worse as he got older.
Jones didn't have any problems staying at the ropes, he often backed to the ropes on his own, blocking, parrying or evading almost all the punches that were thrown at him while there, countering with quick hooks and uppercuts.
He was the best fighter in the world from 1993 until 2003 and considered unbeatable by the best boxing minds over that stretch. That is a very long prime. His fights were not even close. He beat two of the very best boxers of his or any generation and won belts from middleweight to heavyweight. What more do you want from a fighter?
Yes he did later in his career most of the time he was knocked out he was trying to be his old self doing the same thing you mentioned. He just wasnt capable of doing that anymore and no fighter should ever lay on the ropes and fight off of them, its a horrible position to be in, thats why one of the first things you learn in boxing is to stay off the ropes and keep the fight in the center of the ring.
Later in his career is just two fights, at 41 and 42 years of age. This is like saying Willie Pep was easy to hit based on his losses to Kid Bassey and Sonny Leon (when he was 36).
Yep, only time he was stopped in that fashion was against Green (already hurt and actually did cover up well considering he had no legs and Green was throwing the kitchen sink at him, fair stoppage) and Lebedev, arguably the no.1 cruiser, at least a strong and heavy handed one, in the 10th round even further past his best. Tarver and Johnson were both him caught with his hands down. Again? Because his legs were gone and his reflexes dwindling.
I'm not saying he didn't have a great career, he did. But the thread is about the technical mistakes he made. The answer is that he made plenty and that his career would have been even greater without them.
No, its when Jones was getting knocked out more than staying upright and that has stayed pretty consistent since his loss to Tarver.
He wasn't getting knocked out while staying on the ropes, except for two fights I mentioned. And he was on the ropes in pretty much every fight during last 15 years.
Well no, but whilst he was throwing the left hand, I don't mean he was stood there posing. His right hand was up but he was throwing, and unable to spring out of danger as he could with his legs under him. You had to hit Jones whilst he was in mid-flow to catch him. Pretty much impossible until his legs went. If you led, he was too elusive or he could let you throw and block. If you stepped to him he pull anything out of his arse to catch you. If you let him fight at his pace you were dead as well. Funnily enough Roy is the fighter that got me into boxing as a kid. His decline has been horrible to watch in real time.
