Why didn't he try to obtain the lightheavy weight title? I know the heavyweight title is way more prestigious but that was what 4 years after he face his first world class lightheavy?? And he could easily destroy any of the title holders. So why?

the world championship had lots of nws decisions and catchweight losses and wasn't really a proper division for a long time.

Tunney beat Greb for the American LHW championship though so he picked up a title there and was easily the best LHW in the world at that point :good

Good answer, I too think he was the best lightheavy of his time. It just seems kinda weird that he didn't get the World title at that wieght.

the LHW lineage is all out of whack because I can only assume it wasn't a very valued championship back then. I see it going like this:

    Battling Levinsky ..... Oct 1916
Billy Miske Oct 1916 Sep 1918
Harry Greb Sep 1918 May 1920
Tommy Gibbons May 1920 Jul 1920
Harry Greb Jul 1920 Dec 1923
    Gene Tunney Dec 1923 .....
