I definitely think Starling finished him at the top level. My theory is that after his transformation in and after the Curry fight made him feelpretty indestructible, and rightly so, he'd beaten the man who was going to go all the way to Hagler, had done it away from home and battered Curry.

Afterwards he kept it up, bulldozing challengers. Against Starling, this didn't work an Honeyghan noticeable shifted his approach to a smarter boxer puncher, harking back to his form when he was domestic and European champion. When that didn't work either he capitulated.

I guess after the fight he musta' knew his absolute best wasn't good enough not to beat Starling. No longer on top of the World 'The Ragamuffin Man' was only going one place formwise...

Honeyghan seems to me he could adjust to any style

He certainly adjusted to the style of: Shot, former champ, pretty good.

I have this farce on tape. Honeyghan was faded badly by circa 1990. Honeyghan was never the same after Starling TKO'd his ass on HBO in Feb. '89... Breland rebounded okay after his '87 KO loss to Starling, but after Aaron Davis ripped Mark a new ******* in the summer of '90, I also knew Breland's goose was about fully cooked...

This is harsh, but Honeyghan made / earned his rep by stopping a limp-dick Curry in '86 and hammering a shot to hell Johnny Bumphus and an ex-WBA champ at Jr. Welter named "Mad Dog" Hatcher in circa '87.... Honeyghan lost and regained his WBC title to the average Jorge Vaca in '88...... That was Honey's prime....... Honeyghan was slipping fast after Starling hammered him in '89......

Honeyghan had a pathetically short prime. One of the reasons most won't have him anywhere near a Welter top 20 i guess.

    Sibson was better.
