Young out-boxes Leon Stinks, but loses to Lawrence Holmes...:deal

    NOTE:

Had Young been given the dec. in '76 with Ali, Young would've been forced by public demand to grant Ali a rematch by 1977... A motivated Ali gets back his title...:hey

Had Young got the title in '76, he'd have been a short-term champion...:think

The heavyweight ratings from 76-78 were very warped and misleading. Foreman, Norton, Young, and Holmes were the top 4, Shavers probably number 5. Ali vs. Spinks was to me, a time-wasting sideshow. Ali got all this glory for winning the title a third time, which was ridiculous. Any of the other five guys I mentioned would have decimated Spinks. Ali outwrestles Leon in the rematch and people see it as God-like.

I'm a huge Ali jock-sniffer, but I agree that the 2 fights with L. Stinks in '78 were suck-ass at best............ Ali's last supreme effort as a fighter was against Ernesto Shavers in Sept. '77 at MSG......:deal

Whoever he defended against, the place would be packed to the rafters ,what a crowd pleasing savage battler he was, the term ,do or die was coined just for him.

And even in the Shavers fight, you could see that Muhammad had slipped drastically, from two/three years previously. Imagine pairing the 1977 Shavers with the Ali of 1974 !!

Ali was never the same after the thriller. every fight from then on saw him drop in ratings realistically (below young, shavers then norton) and ultimately foreman and holmes as well.

I saw nothing in the ali-young fight to make me think ali beats him in a rematch.

I reckon Ali's pride would carry him through in a Young rematch. He knew he looked like crap in that fight.

I don't think pride has anything to do with it. Frazier took a lot out of Ali that night. Ali just didn't have it any more after that. I mean yeah he had enough to earn a rematch victory over Leon but what's that worth really?
