What's your top 5 for: I. His greatest performances II. His most historically important fights (Overlap permitted as you see fit, of course). I'm curious what some of your lists would look like?
Chavez, Sr. is probably the best ATG at 140 pounds due to his ability to remain there and to also be comfortable for a solid 7 yrs between 1989 thru 1996... He also came back there later on after 147 failed for him........... Aaron Pryor is his main runner-up at 140.......... His title win over Roger Mayweather in '89 and his come-back on points to halt Mel Taylor in '90 are his best accomplishments at 140 pounds..... Oh, of course his '92 beatdown of Camacho is also important to note...... Plus, he smoked a capable, but frozen Greg Haugen down in '93 Mexico....... All good wins there...... Chavez, Sr. is solid at 140 according to the history books...... MR.BILL
Plus, his '94 win over Tony Lopez and his '95 win over David Kamau are noteworthy at 140, too...... MR.BILL Oh, don't space-off the '98 draw to Miguel Gonzalez, either...... Note that, as well........
Meldrick Taylor. Aside from all of the controversy it was a great fight, and he knew he needed a KO to win. Even if it would have went the other way I'd say the same thing. A lot of fighters even when down on the cards will take it easy in 12th round and let the time slip. In this fight JCC left everything he had in that ring to get that win. I do not want to make a list because I'm not a huge follower of JCC or early 90's era. But, to me that was a great fight and a very important one for Chavez. Meldrick doesn't seem to get a lot of love, and he never really had the chance to achieve ATG status IMO, he wasn't the same after that fight.
I list Chavez' fights at 140 cuz he peaked there............. But his KO's over Rosario and his lopsided win over Ramirez at 135 is also important to note....... MR.BILL
Cervantes, nor Benitez, will ever make my top-2 at 140................ Chavez and Pryor do based on their natural ability to peak there.... MR.BILL:deal
Greatest Performances: 1. Rosario 2. Martinez 3. Camacho 4. Haugen 5. Taylor 1 (more so in the later rounds. Incredible display of in-fighting) Historical fights: 1. Meldrick Taylor 1 (Unified battle of the 2 best 140lbers at the time. Became the p4p king withthis victory). 2. Hector Camacho (Grudge match against heated rival from arch rival country Puerto Rico, fight about 8 years in the making) 3. Edwin Rosario (Another fight for Mexican pride as he took against another heated Rican rival, with the Lightweight crown at stake) 4. Mario Martinez (first title fight) 5. Greg Haugen (after all the trash talk of his people, what better place to take revenge than in the ultimate Mexican stage: Estadio Azteca) 5 same fights for both, just in diffrent order. :-D
I consider calling him "Sr." an insult to the sport. It gives credence to whomever might be called "Jr.".
Performances..... Rosario Camacho Haugen Taylor 1 Martinez/Mayweather 1 Greatest historically..... Taylor 1 (A truly defining fight vs a young unbeaten, motivated, great fighter, fight of the decade + the way he turned it around = legendary) Camacho (2 greats of the era + Mexico vs Puerto Rico) Mayweather 2 (became 3 weight champ) Rosario (became 2 weight champ) Haugen (due to the pre-fight hype & Greg never having been stopped before)
Has anybody thought of this...If the Duran that fought Buchanon fought the Chavez that fought Rosario (or Castillo) it would have probably been the greatest fight of all time? Personally, without an opinion on the winner, I think it would have ended both of their careers.
Greatest performances: 1. Rosario 2. Martinez 3. Lockridge (Chavez fights completely differently than normal, boxing and picking Lockridge apart with counters) 4. Camacho 5. Taylor I/Mayweather I/Haugen/Alli Most significant: 1. Taylor I 2. Rosario. A complete schooling and a masterclass on the art of inside fighting against a dangerous, prime fighter. 3. Mayweather II. Chavez earns his 3rd weight title with a patient, unstoppable assaults on a far better prepared Mayweather. 4. Camacho. Chavez beats his long time rival in a Mexico-Puerto Rico matchup, but Camacho had seen his best days go by and it was simply a drubbing. 5. Haugen. A huge spectacle, mostly thanks to Haugen's trash talking.
