Mike McCallum would have knocked out Thomas Hearns at 154lbs. Discuss.

Possible, but not probable.

I wouldn't be shocked, but I would still go with Hearns to box out a decision.

He would have won thought. We had this discussion awhile back and most people thought Hearns would be the winner. I really see McCallum taking a decision here. Too skilled, tough, good body punches, slick, etc. A lot of people argue that he wasn't slick because he didn't have great speed but he was slick and hard to hit flush.

 

Thomas was a beast at 154, during his time at 154 he tended to box more than look for the KO due to ongoing hand problems. If Hearns jabs, and gets on his bike, and moves well I pick him to win a close decision fighting on the backfoot.

 

If anyone could do it, it'd be Mike. When I say anyone I mean anyone who has fought in the division.

I wouldn't bet any money on the body snatcher though, Hearns at that division is a favourite over anyone who's fought there imo. Too fast, powerful and skillful.

 

What are some of mike's best performances? i've only seen toney 1, 2 and the curry fight...

 

At 154 it's probably Kalule, McCrory and Jackson. He didn't look that great against Curry until the KO, but that was probably down to Curry being very, very good. Watson and Kalambay 2 would probably be the picks at 160 besides the Toney fights.

I find this notion about an invincible Hearns at 154 a bit puzzling. It's really all based on two wins. They were both very impressive, but Duran was a faded former LHW and Benitez (whom Hearns outboxed but never really managed to hurt) was a former WW.

So beating two fighter that were very inferior in terms of physical dimensions makes him invincible even though he became decidedly human when movin up just 6 lbs? Isn't a reasonable conclusion that he could struggle also with JMWs that had dimensions as MWs more or less? If guys like Roldan, Barkley etc could him such trouble at 160, why couldn't for example Mugabi and Jackson do something similar at 154?

Mike didn't have their punch, but he was at least as big and much more skilled.

It's not strictly limited to 154.Hearns would be a ******* to beat at either 147 and 154.When you have a fighter with his boxing ability,his speed and power,with the type of physical dimensions that he has......tough day at the office.


McCallum's durable,smart,defensively sound and versatile,so the the possibility of him beating Hearns down the stretch isn't a ridiculous one,I suppose.Always looked a plodder on the front foot,though - McCrory(which is the closest stylistic comparison to Hearns) gave him a very,very competitive fight.
