It is possible that Charles Liston's age was guessed as being 10. I'm still going with May 1927. Foneda Cox who was also born in November 1929, always said Sonny was a couple of years older than him.
Liston's "official" name was: Charles L. Liston Maybe the Census was told his name was Charlie L. (nickname) or the "i" is a dotted "e" and the "e" is a "s".
What if the Census Taker went to Marshall, Texas and wrote "George Foreman 1 thru 8" for all the Foreman offspring on the lines of the appropriate form???
Surely, the "L" would stand for something ? Anyway, I see a "1" not an "L". What's a dotted "e" for ? Do you have any idea what the name above is ?
Line 41 appears to be Curtis. Line 42 appears to be Charlis 1, or rather Charlis L. It's a cursive "L."
If you have Firefox....use Control and + and blow the image up. The line above says "Curtis" (to me) I think the "1" is a "looped L" in cursor format. Remember these are 1940 Fed. Govt Workers from Arkansas...attempting to write.
The man who became champion of the world was just another negro convict from the Missouri State Penitentiary. He could have been anyone.
I heard the Census Bureau Worker asked Charles Liston how old he was,,,,, and Charles L. put up 'one finger', the middle one.
I'm glad this matter has been put to bed now. His age is a mystery no more. Hit his prime at the age of 29. Embarrassed twice by Ali as a 34 year old. The age is just a number anyways doesn't have one dot of difference to his legacy/performance.
Correct,,,,,,,,, With Sonny, age didn't matter, as he had been fighting from Day One. That is all he knew, lumping up people. William Faversham Jr. - pegged Sonny as being at age 37 in February 1964 - give or take a couple of months. That man did his research, and he had the 'money' to find out accurate information.
These census records never look clear in the writing. I've looked at plenty of my own genealogy records and have had trouble with figuring out what the hell half of it was saying because of the cursive writings.
