The WBA had Frazier ranked so low because they dropped him from #1 to #7 after he refused to participate in their tournament. These ratings are deceptive.

 

Italy didnt exactly have the most sterling reputation when it came to its handling of boxing. It still doesnt quite frankly.

Another knock against it and reason why a lot of fighters didnt jump at the chance to fight there was the fact that they allowed the EBU to govern their rules. This was seen by many fighters in the USA as a detriment.


Compare the supposed offers being thrown Ali's way to fight in Italy against cold hard numbers of what was actually being paid to fighters in Italy, and what Ali was making elsewhere and then tell me it was a realistic to expect him to go fight Corletti there.

Yup, everyone was scared of a guy who struggled with even his modest level of competition. When Chuvalo is the best guy youve beaten you may want to rethink claiming you are being ducked.

This is why some of us really appreciate Senor Pepe's threads. He gives recognition to fighters who are rarely mentioned.

And even though he offers a critical view of Muhammad Ali, he sure as hell provides more interesting an original material on Ali and his era than any of the 'hardcore' Ali fans on here.
I mean, the Ali fans on here never have anything much to say that can't be found on the sports book shelf on any decent book shop.
I've rarely seen the big Ali fans on here even acknowledge Ali's amateur career in any sort of detail, for example.
I welcome anything of that sort from Ali's fans. But Senor Pepe is the only one making the effort. :good

None of them. The mid to late 60's was a little light on talent in the heavyweight divison. Frazier was not a force until the end of the 1960's, and Patterson had back issues.

Quarry and Terrell were solid, but would not do well vs. either Klitschko.

Go back to the current forum dame, and realize that different era comparisons can be almost impossible to compare.
Ex: In 1960 your Klit boys would a more gangly 220-225-ish.
In 2000, Patterson would have been a more chisled 205'er.
Enough of the period comparisons.
