I like what Farr, Carpenter and Thomas say about Cassius Clay in 1964.
Between them they strike a good balance.

Thanks ever so much for the Tommy Farr stuff.Brilliant mate. Before my time but must have been a top boxer.Remember my uncle telling me he saw a clip of the Louis fight at the pictures as a kid and one of his mates wanted to stay for the second house"cos Tommy Farr might win this time".Dont know how true that one was though!
Seriously, what a character. They dont make em like that anymore.Bet he could beat Louis in a singing contest, though!

IF Cockell could have stayed at L-HW, WHO would he have been fighting for the title, was it Maxim, Moore, Johnson, Olson, I mean he probably could/should have (if not for his Glandualar disease), been ripe for it from 1952 onward?

IMO 2 great light heavies in that list,Thistle, and one underrated boxer who might have been great(Maxim).Good as he was, dont think Cockell would have beaten any of those 3,but probably could have Olson. What do you think?

I never thought much about Cockell fighting for this title, I've just always known that it was believed; "that IF he could have 'remained' a L-HW he could have won a world title!"

I always figured he had as good a shot as any without thinking about WHO he would have been fighting, I mean he had good wins in Britain against the new stock and the old ones too, as the Farr video shows, but also he has to be credited for Mathews X 3, La Starza and a guttsy beating against Marciano.

so yeah, why not, Moore or Johnson?

Take your point thistle.Forgot about his heavyweight fights. Some good results there. My own opinion is Moore and Johnson the 2 best ever at the weight, think they might have beaten Bob Foster even. Both I think beat Nino Valdes,Johnson i think beat Eddie Machen, among others.Maxim beat Sugar Ray Robinson(albeit lighter)and Floyd Patterson. All respect to Cockell but didnt think he was in that class.I could be wrong, well never know, but its interesting to talk about.Cheers.
