Could Joe Calzaghe still be undefeated if he fought Roy Jones Jr's opponents?

The Johnson that fought Omar Shieka would stand no chance against the Calzaghe who fought Shieka.

It's sounds silly. Don't use Roy Jones' decline as barometer. Glen would never, ever, beat Joe Calzaghe.

Never said Johnson would beat him... I said, at LHW, the Johnson that fought Jones, gives the LHW version of Calzaghe that fought Jones problems. Wasn't really using Roy's decline... Has more to do with the LHW versions.

All of those fighters Joe would have beaten , Hopkins was a bit green , Toney drained .

Joe was when focused a great fighter . All time top 100 and number 1 168 of all time.

Oh please! Johnson in 04 had failed to win more than a quarter of his fights, lost to Branco, Sheika, Vanderpool (the list of bums goes on) and he is going to beat somebody that didn't lose a fight as an amatuer or pro for best part of 20 years!! :nut

if you can understand why a fighter who retired undefeated during his pro career gets so little credibility outside of britain, then you'll understand why so many people outside of britain are sceptical about his chances against some fighters, like johnson, who deserve nothing but respect for the who they fought and when during their career

there are a lot of good reasons to defend joe calzaghe, but his pro record isn't the way to do it

Being undefeated is always a pretyty good argument I would say! OK, so he didn't beat any ATGs in their prime, but he beat some very good fighters and his record at SMW easily stacks up against Hopkins reign at MW or RJJ's reign at SMW/LHW. Fact is the division was not great, but he fought the best there was. If you disagree, tell me who was operating at SMW between 1997-2007 that he didn't fight and please don't say Echols, Ottke or Mundine

i totally agree with you that calzaghe was the best man at SMW, and by some distance
what i'm arguing against isnt calzaghe's ability, because his ability was much better than other euro fighters who sit on a nest egg at home and get rich doing it - i'm arguing against a fighter of his ability who repeatedly called out the best fighters in the states during his reign when he new damn well they weren't sliding down the pecking order to come fight a high risk-low reward fighter like joe.

because joe never chased the big fights he was always talking up, i dont think he deserves credit in fantasy matchups which could have been reality if he made his move

he was a wasted talent in the bigger picture

Of course he could, he was a great fighter, awkward as hell.

I don`t know whether he would but he definitelty could, its within his reach ability wise.

    and herein lies the problem...

you cant call calzaghe a great fighter when he could have answered a lot of these questions...but chose not too

People called Hopkins one of the greatest MWs of all time, when his best wins were Johnson and Griffin. RJJ got the tag of being one of the ATGs when his only really great win was against Toney. It's double standards

People said the exact same thing about Roy Jones at his best, all of a sudden he is a boxing god blah blah blah.... the fact is, every fighters record can be picked at, Calzaghe wasn`t perfect & I personally (as a fan of him) think he should have went to America much sooner, like 10 fkn years sooner to be exact, but he didn`t & that rightfully harms his legacy in an ATG sense.

What annoys me is the disrespect he gets all to often, he was undoubtedly a great fighter, nobody is saying he is the best fighter of all time or even of his own era but to say he wasn`t a special fighter (not you directly, just in general on here) is nothing but blind hatred IMO.

you're right it is, except for one thing :

when you're fighting on the biggest stage in the world, everyone knows who you are and the networks are backing you, then everyone wants to fight you and big fights come to you

****** and calzaghe knew this, and they both knew that so long as calzaghe didnt go to the states then he could coast to a very rich retirement and rarely be challenged

even after ricky hatton beat tszyu, ****** still didnt push hatton's career - which is why he left him, went to the states, and after a handful of fights had his defining fights against floyd and pacman - and he wasnt even as talented as joe was

it didnt matter that hatton lost those fights..the point is you wont see people starting threads on here rubbishing him because he rolled the dice and found out how good he was

    calzaghe consciously didnt
