I met daniel ponce de leon and posed for a pic with him in the restroom at the mgm grand, he seemed like a decent guy. All smiles. A surprise considering he was being accosted in the mens room. I also met antonio margarito a couple days before pac - cotto also in the mgm, it was like 2am and i was pretty drunk. I was on my way back to the room when i noticed him and his missus at the slots. Nobody was around, i walked up and just blurted out "ahh i thought it was yourself". He didnt have a clue what i was saying and was just nodding and smiling. I asked was he in town for the fight(duh) to which i got the same response. Then i just stood there awkwardly for a few seconds smiling before saying "right, see you later". It was probably a weird experience for him too. some awkward ginger irish guy clearly inebriated speaking in an language he didnt understand. Met andy lee twice, he is really cool. He understood me obviously but still gave me a similar reaction to margo the first time. He hadnt turned pro but i had watched him in the olympics. I shouted at him from a distance and then he stopped to talk. I was jabbering on like a nut. thus the nodding and smiling. but he entertained me anyway. I also met larry merchant(gent), manny steward, kiko martinez, gerry penalosa, sergio, marcos maidana(who was very accommodating to any ladies looking for pics, haha), eamon magee, willie casey(a man extremely excited about khan-mccloskey, big mistake),earnie shavers(who didnt seem so polite but had the biggest hands iv ever seen), michael katsidis. think thats it
Met Derry Matthews at our gym... very cool guy Done 3 'light' rounds with Steve Collins for charity a few years back. I remember at the start he said to me "if you try to take my head off, i'll take yours off". I didn't doubt him at all... needless to say I barely touched him! Had a good chat at the gym the following day. Nice fella... very funny! Met Barry McGuigan when I was a kiddie... he seemed alright. I was too awestruck to say anything!
The only boxer I've been within touching distance of is Dillian Whyte. It was at the David Price/Sam Sexton fight and Dillian had just stopped a guy in one round with a body shot, he was in the stand talking to EVERYONE and taking pictures, really nice guy, I just patted him on the back and walked off. He sat near me after he fought on the Price/McDermott under-card he was shaking hands with people again. I'm going to the next Price fight I might see Whyte again.
So here i am walking through the Trafford shopping center in Manchester having attended the Amir Khan Marco Antonio Barrera weigh in When Don King and MAB himself come walking around the corner and im face to face with Mr. Barrera :good:good:good, with no crowds or virtually anyone about to **** up my moment !!! Hence i now have a signed Barrera glove and a personal message from a true legend of the sport
I've had pretty good experiences for the most part. It seems like most fighters will make time for fight fans. Virgil Hill was one of the nicest people I've ever spoke with. I'm met him a number of times, and he's always been polite and has time for people. There was a meet and greet before the Hearns fight and he went up and introduced himself to me and my guest. Freddie Roach was also a gentleman. Sugar Ray Leonard was very polite and made small talk with me. Terry and Orlin Norris were cool. Spoke with Terry about the Leonard fight for a bit. Michael Nunn was a bit stand-offish. But I can't say I blame him much, since there were a lot of people wanting autographs at the time and I think he wanted to just relax a bit. Mike McCallum was also a little distant, but it wasn't anything bad or anything. Joe Cortez was great. Really took time to talk and ask questions. That was a fun experience. Donny LaLonde was really cool, very humble dude. Greg Page was at the same restaurant I was after a kid he was training fought that evening. He was a real gentleman to speak with. It was just shortly before his tragic fight in Kentucky, and I am always a bit haunted by that. Danny Romero was really nice kid to talk to. Earnie Shavers was polite enough, but a little distant. Jeff Fenech was polite and in a bit of a hurry.
Same experience with Teddy. I had him sign his autobiography for me. He was very appreciative of me having bought it. I forgot I met Tommy Hearns once too. After the Pac-Barrera 2 fight waiting for a limo. He could have been a jerk as I fell into him as I tripped over a concrete parking stop. But, he was cool.
I held a camera for an Comcast interview of Robert Guerrero just prior to his training camp for selcuk aydin. After the interview i gotta talk to him for awhile and he was a super down to earth dude which made me an even bigger fan
i been around for some time and met and talked to so many fighters ,promoters refs, etc.almost all boxers are pretty good guys. but i must say larry merchant is by far the biggest ******* i ever met.
I met Jean Pascal at the Cotto-Margarito 2 weigh in, one of the nicest boxers I've met and so is Antonio Margarito who I bumped into on the streets of NY 2 days prior to him fighting Cotto again. Bob Arum is an *******, when I met him, just a real bitter person in general. I also ran into Chuck Wepner but I never said anything to him (I was intimidated by him)
When I was about five or six, my dad took me to meet Jack Dempsey at his restaurant in New York. Dempsey was sitting at a window table signing autographs. My dad took me over. Dempsey looked at me for a moment, knelt down: "Put up your dukes!" I jumped into a stance. Dempsey did likewise, roiling those HUGE fists in my eyes. Roaring with laughter, he hoisted me on his shoulders, like Graziano. Till this day, I can still see that monument face -- right up next to me.
That is a ****ing awesome story!.my tradeschool teacher knows im a huge boxing fan and told me his brother chased jack dempsey down bourke street in melbourne along with a mob of people because he was "arrogant" I think his full of ****... Dempsey runs from no man
