I was recently bought a dvd box set which had Bert Sugar's top 10 heavyweights of all time listed.
I must admit i found his list to be a bit ludicrous in places.
The list is below, but what do you guys think? I believe that Larry Holmes should be way higher than 10, I don't really get how Ezzard Charles is in the top 10 when Lennox Lewis isn't and I also think Dempsey and Tunney are way too high up on the list.

    1. Joe Louis
    2. Muhammad Ali
    3. Jack Dempsey
    4. Jack Johnson
    5. Gene Tunney
    6. Rocky Marciano
    7. Ezzard Charles
    8. George Foreman
    9. Joe Frazier
    10. Larry Holmes

Rest in Peace Bert, you never knew **** about boxing. You gotta give the guy credit for making a nice career in a sport he knew very little about.

The boxed set is good though. Worth the price just to see Bonavena drop Frazier.

Haha Holmes wasn't a happy guy being placed at 10 and Sugar trying to justify it just seemed to **** Larry off even more.

No, none of the 4 you mentioned. A lot of Sugar's reasons for the fighters being in his list were absurd, i.e Charles being such a good light heavy? Holmes ranked so low due to him fighting bums?
The list just seems poor in general tbh

Re-watch his defence of why he rated Jack Dempsey number 3, you'd have to watch it alot of times cos he never actually justifies but he does say some of the following.

    "Biggest thing in boxing ever"

"Greatest left hook in history and that includes Joe Frazier"

"Willard was a man mountain...Firpo was a man mountain...greatest fight in history...in 2 rounds there's 7...11 knockdowns" and other such classics.

I like his stories, but some of them are partly fabricated or flat-out full of ****. I used a lot of the footage though for some of my vids.

You know what they say. An opinion is like three dashes, a space, then four more dashes.

Edit: Whoops. Bummy already beat me to it.

Lampley is a blow by blow announcer and a very good one. I dont think he is expected or held to the same standard as a so called "boxing historian" like Sugar was supposedly. Thats why they have someone like Steward, or Jones Jr or Foreman in the corner, to be that boxing expert to describe whats going on. Thats why Foreman and Merchant got into so much, because Merchant didnt know **** about boxing either. Foreman said some pretty off base stuff, but it always had some kind of meaning related to the difficulty in which a shot or move was in boxing and Foreman could relate to it.
