    Not in 1966 and 1967,,,,,,,,,,,

He was being 'ridiculed' in the press, for every opponent 'he chose' to fight,
    and every opponent he avoided.

    New York Magazine,,,,,,,,,

'How to Get a Fight with Cassius Clay',,,,,,,,

You must be older than 32, and or have been knocked out previously,
or Canadian or European. If you are young, black and talented, forget
about waiting in line,,,,,,,he ain't choosing you.

Similar things were said about Joe Louis and his choice of opponents. Years after the event of course.

As I've said on previous threads,Ali would have whupped all of them in the sixties,if he had n't got banned from boxing.

Youre an Ali hating dumbass. Plain and simple. Only you would criticize Ali for fighting three guys in the top ten, one of whom was his number one contender, all within a year and half of each other.

You do realize that Ali was the most active champion since Joe Louis twenty years prior right? Every guy he defended his title against prior to his exile was ranked in the top ten except Brian London. Thats nine defenses in three years, eight of which are top ten fighters.

Even if you want to argue that Ali was wrong for considering a rematch with Patterson in 1967 you have to consider that Zora Folley, who you criticize and who Ali just defeated easily was rated #2 and Patterson himself was rated #4.

You can keep up this crusade you have. Its gotten laughably transparent. But you are only making yourself look like a child pouring over his daddy's dusty old magazines and grabbing snippets hear and there that conform to his agenda without having a shred of supporting context.

I openly dislike Ali myself, yet even I must admit that this thread is preposterous. Ali worked most of his life to become champ...he wouldn't cast it aside lightly.

I don't really have any problems with his first title reign either. Who was he supposed to be fighting? Frazier wasn't quite ready and was the only guy who would have tested him. I think the Liston defense was bogus, but aside from that , Ali's defenses were for the most part decent. Yes, he could have fought Quarry or Bonavena before the exile, but he got to them as soon as he got back. Thad Spencer, Manuel Ramos, and these other guys proved to be nothing much anyway; Ali would have battered them.

I think there's plenty to dislike about Ali, in my opinion, but it isn't fair to denigrate his first reign as champ, when he was very much a fighting champion.

Quarry wasnt ready as his loss to Machen and draws with Patterson and Alongi showed.

Bonavena may have been ready but its debatable. He was right on the cusp of entering his prime but only had a couple of decent wins over lower tier guys.

The point of this thread wasn't to be about his future bouts,,,,,,

But more of him 'disliking' the baggage that came with being a Champion.

Promoters promising the 'world' with large fight purses, then coming back with
    checks at 1/3 the amount.

Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson were telling other Heavyweights to go to Sweden,
and the next stop to Japan,,,,,,,,because that is where the 'real money' was.

Yeah, the 'baggage' like the babes he was banging, the quarter of a million dollar purses for guys like Brian London, the guest spots on TV, the fame, which Ali clearly hated being so shy and all.

And then he clawed his way back to the championship, through a bevy of some of the most formidible opponents in heavyweight history as soon as he got licensed again. All because he hated being champion and everything that came along with it.

If you read what Muhammad Ali was saying in 1967,

Was that he wanted to get out, and let his brother Rudy go for the
    Heavyweight Championship.

Maybe he really did want to get out, because other than a few news-media
    outlets, nobody really cared.

By June 1967,,,,,,,,,,Cassius was already forgotten.

In hind sight all Ali was losing was his title.

At the time, the real risk he ran was going to the slammer for 10 years. The legal odds were about 50-1 in favor of him doing just that. The title was a very minor problem.

I'm not an Ali fan, but I don't think that's what he wanted.

The story of how SCOTUS ruled in his favor is detailed in The Brethren. It was a legal miracle how that decision came about. It was by pure chance.

He was made to defy the draft by the Black Muslims. He was afraid of being shot if he didn't.

I dont have to read what he was saying. I was there and remember it well. He was on the news all of the time giving interviews, he was in newspapers, in magazines, speaking publicly. He did not just dry up and go away and he certainly wasnt forgotten. He was regarded for years as the champion after he was banned.

Go watch any interview with him and he will say "Now who is the real champion!" or argue as to why he is still champion. This is just one more example of you cherry picking information out of the actual context of the times in order to draw some ridiculous conclusion: Ali wanted to get stripped.

Had you even been born at the time you would realize how crazy that statement is.

So you think Ali willingly got banned from boxing so he could give his brother a shot at his title. His brother, who was also a muslim who would also go through the same thing Ali went through had he been in Ali's shoes? Thats a really great argument you have there.

Would this be the same brother who had not fought in a year when Ali got banned and who would not fight again until late 1970? Good luck with that one.

If Ali was forgotten by June 1967 and your proof is the cover of Ring Magazine why dont you open up that magazine and flip to their ratings and tell me who they have as champion. Then pick up an issue from two years later and tell me who they have as champion, or boxing illustrated, or pretty much any other respected boxing publication. Most, if not all considered Ali champion until he formally relinquished the title prior to the Ellis-Frazier fight.

    Jesus!! Give it up man.

Talk about flogging a dead horse!!

Yes , Ali wanted to give up his primary source of income.

Complete nonsensical rantings and outrageous claims (yet again).

    The man is besotted
