Ken Buchanan v Alexis Arguello

Buchanan via decision. All day.

 

I like Alex in this one. I'm unsure that Ken's jab keeps Alex "honest" enough for the whole 15, Alex would have been tall and long enough to use his own jab and follow it with his own, more hurtful shots. I think Alex could also counter the jab with the right, and use his excellent body attack to take Ken's legs away.

I make it quite even after 10, with Alex taking over down the stretch for a close but clear points win, or a possible stoppage through Ken's fatigue or Ken being too badly marked up to last the 15.

 

Alexis by late 14 rd stoppage....with both fighters cut and swollen.

Arguello is tall, & will be throwing that fast straight right hand, plus a vicious left to the body all night long.

Ken: 5'-7.5 inches ht; 70 inch reach
A. Arq: 5'10" ht, 72 inch reach

 

Ken's footwork and jab wins him a decision.

 

Tough fight to call, 12 rounds is a toss-up, I`d favour Arguello to pull it out in a 15 rounder though (not by stoppage, I see Ken surviving but I think he`d catch Ken more & more with the real damages shots in those last 3 rounds & finish the stronger fighter to take it on the cards)

I go with Buchanan doing it by a convincing decision. Alexis was better overall on a pound for pound basis,but a prime Ken was the better at Lightweight.

 

Buchanan's chin holds up under duress, and he outpoints Arguello, who is still greater in a pound-for-pound sense.

 

If Vilomar Fernandez could stay one step ahead of Alexis for the decision...i'll take Kenny Buchachan, the Tartan Twirler Jab and Soft Shoe Shuffle his way to a CLear Decision.

 

The Vilomar Fernandez aspect did cross my mind when assessing this match, but that was a non-title 10 rounder iirc, and also iirc, I think Fernandez was more of a runner than Ken? 15 rounds with AA is much, much harder than 10.

Maybe I'm selling Buchanan short but i just think Alex is just a bit better even at lightweight, and I would fancy him to win in a technically excellent contest that may not be totally appreciated by the more bloodthirsty members of "The Fancy".

 

Alexis is for sure an ATG, but I wouldn't sell Buchanan short on this one. Alexis always had trouble with slick boxers, and Kenny was as slick as they come. However, I see Alexis coming on late and winning a close 15 round decision (of course it has to be a 15 round fight, no kiddie fights on ESB classic)

 

As much as I love AA...it's Buchanan all day and all night in this one. Alexis would be wishing he was fighting Vilomar Fernandez it would be so bad for him.

 

I can actually visuallize this fight taking place..with the ring entrance for Buchanan being "Scotland the Brave". If this fight had actually taken place Buchanan's stock would be exponentially higher than it is today with some people who aren't as taken by the Super Scot as I am.

 

Judging by the amount of posters on here backing Buchanan, maybe I've read this one wrong?

 

I think this might play out quite like Arguello's fight with Marcel, but with more of an edge to the boxer role(buchanan) as Arguello was slower and less the sheer physical force at 135.
