We need someone like the guy who reffed Berto/Collazo who didn't allow all the damn holding. Smoger is a good ref, when both fighters come to fight, but when one guy is so damn negative, his laissez faire ref style is a detriment.
The problem with that is Ward is not content to just grab. he grabs and hits. He will close the gap at times specifically to do that, and Smoger will likely let it fly without point deductions.
My thoughts exactly. Smoger is a FOTY, ref. I am stoked he is licensed in Cali hope he does the October card with Rios/Alvarado on it.
I like smoger but damn this favor ward in a huge way cause smoger is the kind of ref that will let the fighters do whatever they want like clinching in which ward will do soo many times.
This is one of very few fights where Joe Cortez would be great(a guy who allows very little inside fighting)
i like Smoger for a fight that will be a war between punchers where he lets the fight go on, most notably is Pavlik vs Taylor 1 but in this sort of fight i want a ref who will break clinches Smoger tends to let guys hold on too much and takes a bit too long to seperate i mean some refs like Jay Nady in some fights break it up right away as soon as they remotely tough inside and thats wrong too so tough to find the happy middle ground, well Dawson handled the bigger more experienced Hopkins inside so im not expecting a hug fest here good ref i think
