I've always been more intrigued by their first fight than the Long Count battle. Tunney was truly at his best in '26 and I'm starting to believe that he would have been too skilled for Dempsey period..Tunney remains the most underrated of great champions.

    Yes and no.

One factor that effects his final standing, is the matter that he chose to retire at his absolute peak, and sacrificed his chance to realy build a resume that would have stood up against some of the ATGs. Its a shame in some ways, because apart from Sharkey, there wasn't anybody who could have given him a competitive fight.

What's forgotten a lot of times is that those two fights of theirs was for that feeble, ridiculous 10 round limit. If those fights were for 15 rounds, Tunney would have stopped Jack on both occasions, IMO,...as a matter of fact, the second fight may have never happened if the 1st fight was set for 15.

The second fight had to happen since Jack was a legend who had just stopped the number 1 contender.

I think Tunney wins prime for prime.

But dont tell me Dempsey didnt do it for the money, beating the top contender or not it wasnt Tunny, who yes was in his prime and at his best. Dempsey had to know he was gonna lose that fight.

Dempsey was on the out and out but he was no dummy..he knew he could pull more money outa the second fight, and still put on a decent show.
