It seems like it. HBO seems to really want to push this guy. He has a ton of talent, he fights the best, and he seems to be the type of guy that garners strong interest. I liked the way he's fought in his last two fights. If he continues to fight like that, and not do all that holding, he could be the top star in the sport relatively soon.
He could he does not seem to have the personality though but maybe his promoter (Goosen should step it up)can adapt a Sugar Ray Leonard approach maybe put him in a couple of commercials outside HBO, try to get him in Sprite, Kia commercial or something
Most def. HBO seem quite fond of him. He looks like he'll go undefeated for a very long time. His style also ensures he won't be a flash-in-the-pan type fighter. He's a great investment for HBO and promoters. The futue's bright, the future's Ward. My only concern is that his style won't get any more exciting that it already has. I hope I'm wrong, but, it's pretty clear he's not cut out from the same cloth as Pacquiao, Tyson, Roy Jones, etc. He's not thrilling.
I can't see him getting 20 mill purses anytime soon to be honest. Unlike PAC, mayweather, del la Hoya something is still missing. He will be p4p number in the next few years.
He either needs to start selling himself better (so he is talke about more) or the promoters need to start doing a better job (promoting him).
He does seem more Tim Duncan than Lebron James (using the basketball analogy) personality wise. How come promoters these days do not try to put fighters in commercials that way the public can relate to him without the gloves on he seems very well spoken why not put him Ford, Subway, or Geico commercial
He will likely become a PPV fighter but too much clinching and Jesus talk to become a major star IMO. If Chavez beats Sergio, a Cinco de Mayo fight against Ward would be massive and exactly the type of fight to increase Ward's profile to casual (dick riding) fans.
Boxing is no longer a mainstream sport. Coke/Pepsi are more likely to want a high-profiled basketball/football star who the majority of the public will know and recognize, than a boxer in a small-time (recognition wise) sport.
Ward's personality is the antithesis of Mayweather's..... Supposedly, Mayweather donned the "badguy" role (really, its a poor excuse for lousy, immature behavior he naturally has) and the american public has never wanted to tout him as a hero because of that. Ward CAN BE America's hero. He's modest, has a good upbringing, has a good family with a religious backing, speaks honestly and earnestly and intelligently. He is someone that can be safely idolized because of his honorable, clean, and strong character. It'd be really nice to see him marketed and exposed out in the future, but i dont anticipate on seeing that on a large scale (like Pacquiao). Not sure he's all into that. Hope i'm wrong, cuz boxing really needs it....
