Debate over. Andre Ward is the greatest SMW ever, well clear of Calzaghe.

    Yup. :good:good

Failey has deserted the thread after being poleaxed by facts, which expose the feebleness of his biased argument:

Andre Ward is in a position like Michael Spinks after the Holmes' wins. Great couple of wins and a top legacy at light heavy but him being destroyed by Tyson completely ruined his legacy at heavyweight.

That's my point. His position at 168 is not sturdy enough. If he lost to Bute by a second round knockout in his next fight and then was schooled by Dirrell, would anyone still rank him above Calzaghe? Of course not.

    but they are MASSIVE 'ifs'.

Your logic is sound because you do have the advantage of comparing what has happened to Cal over what might happen to Ward. Its a tad unfair to call huge 'ifs' on a boxer when someone hasnt had the opportunity to test your 'if' out.

Time will tell, then we can all come back to this thread and laugh it off as older men round the proverbial campfire of ESB.

Oh, I agree. That's pretty much my point. Right now, I think the answer is quite clearly Calzaghe but I expect Ward to surpass him. However, it's unfair to base a judgment based on predictions because, as I point out, anything can happen. If Ward goes on to dominate, we'll have this poll again and I'll vote for Ward. If he happens to suffer a couple of bad losses, I'll stick to Calzaghe.

Right now, it's Calzaghe. I expect Ward will surpass him though, because I don't see any of those hypothetical losses that I mentioned playing out in reality. Ward is too good for anyone around right now but his resume isn't better than Calzaghe's at this stage, therefore he can't be ranked higher.

Ward's resume is better than Calzaghe's already. The only thing Calzaghe has in his favour is depth, but it's a depth made up of mediocrities and bums. Ward's three best wins (Froch, Kessler, Dawson) are significantly better than Calzaghe's (Kessler, Lacy, Mitchell).

Roy jones had 6 titles fights at 168, the same number Ward has.

Roy's opposition was weaker though, Toney aside. Jones's second best win at smw wasn't even a title fight, vs Malinga.

Ward is fighting home for a reason. Its quite obvious. He would make more money fighting Vegas, NY or even Nottingham. His gains at home are a big factor for winning fights. Those gains are too crucial and he knows it.

He should fight Kessler or Froch at europe.
