Debate over. Andre Ward is the greatest SMW ever, well clear of Calzaghe.

Nobody with any credibility rates Calzaghe in any capacity as it stands, despite what the forums resident Welshmen (and miscellaneous trolls) so desperately want people to believe.

So that's not really saying much.

Ward hasn't fought anybody in the same stratosphere as a prime Toney. That fact alone makes his level of SM opposition inferior to Roy's. Guys like Froch and Kessler are several levels below Toney.

That fight could've easily been a "title fight", if non-incompetent judges had been present to score Malinga's fight with Chris Eubank properly.

Roy's win over Malinga is easily better than Ward's win over Dawson and about on par with his wins over Kessler & Froch. And Ward has no comparable win(s) to Roy' victory over Toney.

 

Pretty much spot on. I personally give Ward the edge in accomplishments, simply because he win in a more dominant fashion. To me Wards victory over Dawson surpasses Calzaghes win over Hopkins, because the latter was a complete stinker and a bloody close one to. But Calzaghe still has the best top win IMO, because he fought a sharper version of Kessler and without cheating that were obvious to everyone save die hard American fans.

I agree. Ward would have figured Calzaghe out.

But there is one problem with declaring Ward the best of the two H2H.....

Ward competes on chess. He is a brilliant chess player. He is not the fastest, not the hardest hitter and so on. But he knows and thinks the sport better than pretty much anyone else.

So in a chess competition.. Ward probably wins. Because I agree that he would have figured out Calzaghe. Remember that Kessler was winning the fight until round 7. Calzaghe has said many times that the Kessler fight is the only one he thought he was losing... until he saw Kessler breathing hard in round 7. Hopkins also had Joe figured out, and did well against him for 2-3 rounds. Why didn't they beat Joe then?

Because Joe competes on marathon. Noone at 168 has ever had anywhere near the stamina that Joe does. People may figure him out... but so far they all crack when they try to hang with Joe's energizer bunny style..

Ward may be the more complete and advanced fighter, but I would not bet on him to beat Joe anyway. Because Joe is a great fighter even without the superhuman stamina. So they would probably share the first 6-7 rounds.. perhaps Ward winning a slight majority... but then I really think that Ward would (like everyone else) have trouble keeping up.

Ward is excellent. So I also cannot guarantee a Calzaghe win.

 

For what? For beating an overrated, weight-drained Dawson, who lost to an even overrated Pascal. He is in an era of very weak 168.

Wake me up when he fights 20 meters away from his hometown.

Did you just sidestep the fact that he beat Hopkins the man who beat Pascal ? Dawson was still viable too bad he was weak at 168 .
