    Not taking anything away from Walcott or Charles, but the were past their primes. I think you know this. Walcott was older than Charles. They put up great performance against Rocky, but that does not mean that they weren't past it.

    Remember, Rocky had just witnessed the 'bad fight' between Cassius and Floyd in
    Las Vegas in November 1965, and the fan reaction at that bout had bothered him.

    It wasn't only the boo's, but the deep routed hate in the sound. It was something he
    had never heard before, 'the tone of the booing'.

    Later he said it was,,,,,,,,, 'hate'.

    Rocky was right,,,,,,

    The Heavyweight Division 'had no fizz'.

    1966 was 'dull'.

    1) Cassius had to go to Europe to get a decent fight purse.
    2) Sonny had to go to 'Sweden' to fight.
    3) There was 'no excitement' in the division.
    4) Joe Frazier was 2-years away.
    5) Jerry Quarry had potential, but lacked complete skills.
    6) Ernie Terrell was boring.
    7) Floyd Patterson retired in November 1965, only to be begged to come back in September 1966.

    Yes he did, clearly. Rocky actually fought fighters who knew how to keep a high guard, how to throw a jab, throw combinations, use head movement, etc..

    After being told that Cassis Clay was going to defend the Heavyweight Championship
    versus Brian London.

    'That is not right, it diminishes the roll of a champion. It would be like the New York
    Yankees playing the World Series versus the New York Mets.'

    'If you want to perform an exhibition, well that's one thing, but Brian London in a
    Heavyweight Championship, that's not to my liking.'

    'It's not up to me to say if Sonny Liston should be allowed to fight again. If
    the public wants to see him, they will pay. If not, the promoter will lose money.
    Let's see what happens when he comes backs. I know the guy can fight, but
    mentally he might not want to.'

    'I like the Cassius Clay - Henry Cooper Championship fight. It should be good until Cooper gets cut.'

    The 60's were very weak, Frazier emerged but he fought Ali in his 26th fight and burnt out shortly after. Mathis was not much and even Floyd looked good with his experience against Ellis, Bonavena,Quarry and Ali (despite his injury) Did Floyd get better or experience show up, I think it was experience....Charles,Walcott, Layne, Moore,Etc. and Lastarza would have fun with this group of youngsters.
