Holmes refused to fight Greg Page, the top fighter of his era, along with other guy who may have been top contender, Michael Dokes. He also refused to fight the very deserving Gerrie Coatzee, using his being from South Arica as excuse. He fought the undeserving Gerry Cooney instead, **** Holmes.
No, this is the worst heavyweight era. Larry's era wasn't great, but there was a lot of talent that got wasted away due to cocaine. And if you don't have Holmes in your top 10b than you must be on some major drugs yourself.
I remember an oh-so-skilled Larry Holmes fighting Gerry Cooney and Holmes used some kind of karate block to defend his body against Cooney's dangerous left hook to the body. Funny thing about it was that Holmes' shitty choice of technique caused Cooney's left hook to land squarely on Holmes' own genitals. That's some skill there.:good
Tell me how this era is the worst ever when we had middleweights in the past competing for the HW title. No longer a 46 year old Archie Moore who still has a chance, even if the big men now don't have the skill, they have brute power. Valid would be that we're out of talented inside body punchers, body punching isn't rewarded enough in the amateurs so nobody does that anymore, and the some people who copy Muhammad Ali (who didn't really bodypunch)
There is still a market for old time dvds (dvds with old time fights) and books, if historians make the past brighter they will sell more, they'll continue doing that until they see something more profitable.(Not everyone, but you can't trust people on money) Sonny Liston was a hated hw champ, nobody really wanted him. But they can earn money with his fights now by making the past look the best. (Selling books and dvds.)
