Actually, I do like Kelly Pavlik and LOVED it when he exposed the overrated Jermain Taylor - but the fact was was that he was damaged goods by the time Martinez fought him. Martinez has built his recent career at the world class level by beating guys with serious flaws - i.e.Williams (chin), Cintron (heart); guys who had names but were somewhat past it (Pavik); or European fighters who were never that good to begin with (Macklin, Dzinziruk). I will be very, very surprised if Martinez is not exposed this weekend as having been RIDICULOUSLY overrated.
We will see who is right my friend!!! When Martinez hits the canvas, I do expect an acknowledgement of my prescience on this one!!!D
I'm not dismissing Chavez and saying he cannot win. I'm saying that Zakman is posting sheer crap in a lame attempt to wind people up, which he is! What if Martinez hits the canvas, but comes back to win? Or what if he wins outright? Will you own up that you were wrong? Or will you continue your mocking tone (which quite frankly, is beneath you) in your everlasting trolling quest? :smoke
I will admit I am wrong if I am, but I certainly will not shy away from pointing out any limitations revealed about Chavez either. But I think this is a very unlikely eventuality. Why? Because this guy Martinez is basically a regional level fighter who is being RIDICULOUSLY over-hyped, as I have said, as a result of wins over seriously flawed fighters (Williams, Cintron); guys who weren't that good to begin with (Macklin, Dzinziruk); or a fighter who was addled by booze and on the downside (Pavlik). This guy Martinez is a MIRAGE. He does not belong anywhere near the P4P top ten. And if Chavez is even 1/10th what his old man was, he will expose this regional level fighter for what he actually is.
There r guys going absolutely insane, irrealistic to say the least concerning Martinez and Chavez Jr. I have watched carefully the Dzinziruk fight, the two PW fights, the Cintron fight, the Barker and Macklin fights and also the Duddy fight, the Zbik fight, the Peter Manfredo Jr fight and the Andy Lee fight. All Junior opponents were able to hit him easily and they didn't have the footwork to get out of traffic like Sergio has. The difference is going to be on the quality rather than the quantity of punches landed of Martinez compared with the aforementioned Junior opponents. Martinez is going to damage Junior fo'sure and swellings, cuts, bruises, shut eyes are not things that Junior can avoid or fight against with all his bravado.
I agree with Martinez having great footwork and good bait and counter type style, But look at those fights again, and look at how they too were able to hit Martinez, Cintron though really knocked out managed to talk the ref into letting the fight go on and he worked his way to a draw. Macklin and Barker both were able to hit Martinez quite a bit and they do not turn their shots over and keep them short as Junior does and Paul Williams in fight one was able to drop Martinez early and hit him an awful lot, The rematch was more of Martinez taking a step back to create distance and fire a hard left hand haymaker and it worked. its not going to work here I dont see it really....... I respect Martinez I like him as a fighter but I think at 37 years old he wont be able to fight at the pace he was able to with Pavlik and PWill that has shown to be true in the last two fights Martinez had....
I can understand and see ur points of view on the Martinez fights. Really, Martinez doesn't have the body language that Junior has but that's due to Junior having watched and worked his father's compact, solid boxing technique. However I can't figure out how that comes to play. Macklin. Cintron, PW and Barker stretched SM to the very end with boxing ability and fighting tall and look at those Knockouts Martinez still produced... The main question here is that the peek a boo style Junior uses is not making an advantage of his height and reach but by the opposite, it's clearly creating targets for SM to unleash bombs on him with arched left arm or str8 stiff shots. Age is definitely a number here cause they are in good shape and ready to go. The pace doesn't catch up with any one of these. It's not like Calzaghe pushing Hopkins to the limits of his age in the end stretch of their fight or Dawson scoring big against either Johnson or Tarver. Actually, Martinez has overturned fights in the end stretch like Barker and Macklin of late. Chavez Jr is growing and losing a fight won't damage his progression as he definitely increased quality to his boxing with that Freddie Roach shoe-shinning and polishing. He really looked great since the Zbik fight all the way to the Lee fight. I don't see Chavez Jnr style creating problems for Sergio now though.
I agree to an extent with Zak,Chavez has a hell of a shot to stop Martinez. We shall all see Sat. nite.:good
I think people read into some of Juniors fights too much, Junior prefers to bang it out no mystery here, Zbik couldnt hurt him and he know it which is why he was willing to stand there and trade. He wont fight the same with Martinez, I mean he will in spots when Martinez is on the ropes or in the corner, but the most important aspect here is for Chavez not to follow Martinez as that is exactly how Martinez scored his recent knock outs they followed him he set a trap and took advantage of it. Junior must do a Lennox Lewis style when Martinez is moving, stay in the center of the ring use feints to keep Martinez thinking and pull the trigger and punch with Martinez when Martinez is being pressured back. if he tries to step with Martinez thats where that left hand can end the night... But I do not see Martinez getting that kind of shot off, in fact I see Chavez making clean contact early possibly dropping Martinez, but from there I expect to see a different Martinez one who will suddenly respect this kid. Thats the deal here, Martinez has Zero respect, has stepped out of himself and started trash talking that to me is a sign of concern
