It was probably a rather fat version of Louis.
He fought most of his fights less than 3 lbs away from the modern cruiser weight, it could have been a too heavy Louis that had to experience the diminishing returns of the extra weight.

I think charles could bulk up and quite easily mimic byrd and outpoint tua.

I don't think Charles is as durable as Byrd so Tua's punching chance is slightly higher but Charles should be a fairly big favourite to do this.

Charles was clearly past his prime by 1954, but I stand by my original statement that Charles put on one of the best performances of his career that night on june 17th 1954.

Where did you come from? you are easily one of the worst posters I've encountered in my 7 years on ESB.

Tua was past his best against Byrd though but yes Charles could bulk up in the modern era, make him stronger more durable with more weight in his shots

I sorry SQ, he was three weeks shy of 33. Of course he was one of the better versions of himself, most are after 100 fights, out of their best weight and pushing 33 .. keep dreaming or post again as Liston's Jab ...

Charles just might be my favorite fighter of all time... still, my gut says, "Tua by KO".

Charles was better in many ways-

faster, better footwork, better jab, more accurate, and better defense. Charles was also taller with a longer reach.

Tua was heavier, stronger, and punched harder. He was also more durable.

About conditioning... when Tua was in shape, he actually seemed to get stronger as the fight progressed. He had more than a few late round KOs. His late round power was very good... this is what would concern me if I was working Ezzard's corner.

    Look at Tua's fights vs.-

David Izon KO12- Izon outboxed and outworked Tua at times but Tua kept working and eventually stopped Izon.

Oleg Maskaev KO11- he broke Maskaev down and didn't get frustrated when Maskaev showed up tougher than expected

Ike Ibeabuchi L12- both men went toe to toe for 12 rounds. Hard shots and lots of them. No stamina problems here. The fight was very close.

Hasim Rahman KO10- Rahman outboxed Tua for much of teh fight and mayeb the fight was stopped under controversial circumstances but the bottom line is that Tua still had one shot KO power in both hands even in round 10

Fres Oquendo KO9- Oquendo gave Tua trouble but Tua kept chopping at him until he fell.

I have no doubts that Charles could outbox Tua for most of the fight and reach the late rounds. What happens in rounds 9-12 though.

As much as I like Ezzard the version who fought Marciano the first time around gets his clock cleaned by Tua wiithin the distance, and quite possibly in the first half of the fight if Tua comes in fighting like he did vs Ibeabuchi.

For all of Ezzards skills he wasn`t exactly the most mobile fella at this stage of his career, and to stand within punching range of Tua is not gonna do him any favours and will likely result in him getting nailed at some point and taken out, getting hit by the Rock and getting hit by Tua is apples and oranges.

Hell, a grazing punch from Tua will hurt him more than a full on left hook to the face by Rocky, and Ezzard aint got the durability to stand in the pocket against someone like Tua, he needs legs to stick and move and keep him at arms lenght for most of the fight, and like I said before at this point in his career mobility wasnt the name of the game for Snooks.

    Tua By KO within 10.

True, but there is big size difference between Rahman and Ezz and durability wise too. I aint saying Ezzard can`t win this, but I just don`t think its likely is all, at least not the version of Charles that squared off against Marciano both times.

This is why I'm leaning slighty in favour of Tua, despite the fact he was like a planetary body, sitting in the centre of the ring and rotating he had the durability and wasn't prone to getting cut so he'd be there at the end for sure. Ez was an excellent text book boxer but 12-15 rounds is a very long time to go without getting caught even with something grazing, which is all Tua would really need. Tua could be suprisingly fast with his hooks and all it would take was about 6 inches of a punch to KO a man cold. For Ez to win this he'd need to be like Ali or Tunney, stay on the outside and stay on his bike the latter of which he didn't do. Tua also in his prime had suprisingly good stamina, so it's really down to what you think is more likely to happen

Ez outbox him for the entire fight something a fair few fighters have done to Tua although none as small as Ez

    or

Tua catches Ez at some point and finishes him off

Charles completely nullified Marciano's left hook. I don't know if Marciano landed more than a handful of left hooks and Marciano throws tons of them.

If Tua is going to win it's going to be through body-punching. It's possible, as he is a great puncher that's 215 lbs with respectable explosion at this stage of his career.

This is a far point, and I have an inclining Tua would win (Certainly could). Not sure if a grazing punch from Tua would hurt more than a full on left hook from Rocky. Tua is bigger, stronger, and a bigger puncher but when you're talking about top shelf power I don't think the disparity is quite that extensive. You could be right, though. Maybe if Tua had 6 oz gloves instead of 10 oz ones this would be more likely. The thing is, this statement can only be true talking about Tua's left. And while Tua is a better puncher, Marciano was better with both hands.

Charles was pretty much in absolute pro at nullifying the left hook, though. Try counting how many Marciano lands that first fight. He throws awkwardly, unpredictably, and often and Charles still renders Marciano left hand virtually ineffective. Tua's body-punching, and the fact that Charles possesses little risk would be Charles bigger issue I believe. Marciano was probably more conscious and concerned about Charles' punches than Tua would be.
