Good posts Señor Pepé. Thanks for the history lesson. I was a huge fan of boxing over the years that followed, but Terrell was a "champion" whose reign I never knew much about.
Strange that he seems to have had this grudge against Patterson. It's not like Terrell himself got ducked.
Just looked this up - apparently Terrell did feel he got ducked by Patterson. Weird, considering he was in no way a contender during Patterson's reign. This content is protected
Correct, and 'good digging' Julie Isaacson had a 'real problem' with Floyd Patterson and Julius November (Floyd's advisor). He felt they undermined the whole WBA Tournament, and that they were angling for the 'next' shot at the winner of the Cassius Clay vs. Sonny Liston rematch, where the 'big money' was. Unfortunately for Ernie Terrell, after defeating Eddie Machen in March 1965, he disappeared for 8-months, and didn't surface again until November 1965 versus George Chuvalo. Proposed WBA Championship bouts with, a) Tony Alongi, b) Henry Cooper, c) Karl Mildenberger and d) Amos Lincoln - all fell 'flat'. They even tossed around the name of 'The Happy Wanderer' - Hubert Hilton.
November 1, 1965 Toronto Maple Leafs Gardens - Toronto, Canada WBA Heavyweight Champion - Ernie Terrell and Canadian 'tough guy' George Chuvalo have made peace, and have agreed to fight each other, and bash each other's brains in. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 26 year-old WBA Champion Ernie Terrell won a 'one-sided' 15-Round Decision over 28 year-old Challenger George Chuvalo. The Champion, utilizing a 'rapid-fire' left hand, scored easily throughout the early rounds of the fight, without a meager return from the Canadian. In Round 6, the best round of the fight, Chuvalo was able to fire some hard punches, and scored with a few solid blows. But the Champion came back with swift left hands, that bloodied the nose of Chuvalo. Chuvalo who fought 'flat-footed', was too slow for the much quicker Champion, and was unable to get close enough to land his powerful hooks to the body. Even in using one-hand (left), Terrell was dominant in almost every round, and Chuvalo appeared to be 'no match' for the Chicago-based Champion. Terrell was able to open up cuts over both of Chuvalo's eyes, as the tough brawler could not figure out a way to get inside of the long left hand jab. Both fighters tired at the end, and Chuvalo was finally able to score, but his punches did not carry enough power to hurt Terrell. Ernie Terrell scores a Unainmous Decision. Scorecards; Referee, Sammy Luftsprin..........72-65 Judge, Fred Norbert..................73-65 Judge, Billy Burke.....................69-65 This content is protected
November 1965 Ernie Terrell, wants Floyd Patterson after his bout with Cassius X. Ernie Terrell, "I know Floyd is going to get beat by Cassius X. Then I want him next, to finish closing his 'chicken beak'. Cassius and I will send that 'chicken' out to the hen house for a good 'plucking'." Ernie Terrell, "Does anybody think Floyd will win that bout. It's a joke, Cassius will use that rabbit for a punching bag. I've heard rumors that Floyd is carrying a bad back, so he has an excuse already in his bunny bag.'
January 1966 'Ernie Terrell Wants Cassius Clay' Ernie Terrell says that he wants Cassius Clay before the Army gets him. 'Uncle Sam Says I Want You, and That's What I Say To Clay'. The guy doesn't want to go in to the U.S. Army, don't let the Black Muslim stuff fool you, the guy has a 'yellow streak' down his back. He wouldn't take one moment to help a fellow soldier. Personally, I wouldn't want that clown in a fox hole with me. With that big mouth of his, he'd probably get everyone killed. If Clay doesn't want to fight, I could go to New York and 'beat up' Floyd. Somebody said for me to fight Chuvalo again, and I would if the money is right, but I don't think the public would buy it. Unfortunately the money to fight Zora is not there, so I might take an 'easy one' until I figure out where the best money deal is.' Current WBA Ratings *** Ernie Terrell #1 - Zora Folley #2 - Floyd Patterson #3 - Amos Lincoln #4 - George Chuvalo #5 - Thad Spencer #6 - Karl Mildenberger #7 - Doug Jones This content is protected
June 28, 1966 Sam Houston Coliseum - Houston, Texas WBC Heavyweight Champion - Ernie Terrell 38-4-0 (18 KO's) will defend Championship versus #7 WBA Challenger - Doug Jones 29-6-1 (19 KO's). This will the '2nd-Defense' for Ernie Terrell. The 27 year-old 6' 6" Champion has put on 10 lbs. of muscle, and will now fight at 209 lbs. Ernie Terrell, 'I will show Mr. Jones how to 'eat a left jab'. His mouth will so full of leather after I'm done with him, he won't be hungry for a month.' The 6' 0" 188 lb. 29 year-old Doug Jones, a New York Heavyweight, has won '5' straight bouts by 'knockout', and promises to make the 6' 6" 'thin man' his '6th knockout' victim in a row. Doug Jones, 'He can't avoid a right hand lead, his chin hangs out there like a lantern. This fight is going to be so easy. After I take care of this 'phony', I'll take care of the other clown, Cassius Clay.' This content is protected On the undercard; Cleveland Williams vs. Tod Herring, in a WBA Elimination bout. The 33 year-old 'Big Cat' 64-5-1 (51 KO's) is on the comeback trail, following a highway traffic incident with a police officer in November 1964. A win here, and Mr. Williams will be next for Ernie Terrell. Tod Herring, a 29 year-old from Texas, carries a big right hand with his 26-5-0 (19 KO's) record. The 6' 3" 206 lb. Texan predicts an 'upset victory' within 4-Rounds.
June 28, 1976 "Ernie Defends Title In A Comical Match' Ernie Terrell utilizng a 6" height advantage and what seemed like a 'football field' adantage in reach, won a lop-sided 15-Round Decision over Doug Jones. Terrell using only one hand, his left jab, continually put it into the face of the shorter Doug Jones, who could net get inside the 'long tentacle arms' of the Champion. Doug Jones won Round 1, by getting inside and landing left-hooks to the body of the 6" taller Champion. And then, switched by landing several good lefts and rights to the head. But the Champion took control in Round 2, first landing a hard left hand, then a straight right that drove the smaller Jones into a corner. Terrell continued to belt away, driving Jones all away across the ring into another corner. While keeping his opponent in the corner and pounding away, Terrell landed a low-blow. The Champion had his 'best round' taken away. In Round 5, Terrell's continuous 'heavy' left jabs into the face of Jones, caused his nose to bleed. Doug Jones came back in Round 6, when he landed an overhand right that cut the Champion over his right eye. Several left hooks to the body gained Jones his first winning round since the 1st-Round. But the Champion, with a 22 lb. weight adavantage used his superior reach, to land left jabs time and again on the shorter Jones, and dominated from Rounds 7 thru the 10th. By Round 11, it was now obvious that Jones had no chance of winning, as the Champion prevented the Challenger from mounting any offense, by clutching and holding. In Round 12, the bout turned into a 'wrestling match', and the Sam Houston Coliseum fans boo'd the two combatants. In Round 14, Terrell landed several low-blows, after first stunning Jones with a left hook and right hand. Again Terrell was penalized by Referee, Ernie Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Champion had Rounds '2' and '14' taken away from him for 'low-blows'. Doug Jones was 'felled' in Round 14, but it appeared to be more of a push, than a punch. Scorecards Referee, Ernie Taylor.......146-141 Judge, Chris Jorda...........146-140 Judge, Max Ross.............145-140 The UPI scored the bout...141-141 (9-6-0 in Rounds, but deducted 3-points from the Champion for low-blows). Ernie Terrell, 'I could fight George Chuvalo again. Or maybe Amos Lincoln again, as he just beat that guy Elmer Rush. Cleveland Williams told me he won't be ready for another 6-months. Boy, there sure isn't too many guys to fight out there.' This content is protected
September 13, 1966 Harry Markson of Madison Square Garden has signed contracts for the WBA Heavyweight Champion - Ernie Terrell to meet Argentinian - Oscar Bonavena in December 1966. The only thing Oscar Bonavena has to do, is defeat 'undefeated' Joe Frazier on September 21, 1966 -
Liston lost the title to Ali (Cassius) in Feb. Patterson beat Machen. Chuvalo stopped Jones in the Fall. As in any era your Terrell and Williams weren't in the equation due to the aforementioned bouts. Ernie was handed a 'title' shot shortly thereafter and Big Cat took a bullet (not sure when) but he clearly was on the downside by that time. I don't understand your "Floyd's a big chicken" crap. After Liston he beat Eddie and George in Feb. 65. Every era can trowel out this or that guy that wasn't given a shot so why do you, seemingly, attempt to degrade a HOF'er like Floyd with your what if scenerio's?
jowcol, I respect your opinion,, But I was asking for a United Sates bout, not a 'Swedish Meatball' The Floyd Patterson (W Dec 12) over Eddie Machen was far from an exciting bout, as the boxing press still called the bout ''Still Too Tame To Be A Tiger', regarding Floyd's performance over a 'stoic' Eddie Machen. George Chuvalo (KO 11) over Doug Jones was probably the 'best' of 1964. Sonny Liston and Cassius Clay, the title changed hands, but the bout was far from an exercise in 'quality boxing'. See what I mean, in 1964 the Heavyweight Divsion was 'milk toast'.
