What we learned from last nights Fights

9.atsch he can not move up he fights middleweights with cruiser weight once he moves up he will not be that much stronger and 168 is very good division there is at least 5 fighters that will beat him easy at 168!!!

 

Some good points.

People might forget about the Hernandez fight with all the subsequent action but two of the judges cards there were a joke, and the ref not much better in the 5th round, gave him every chance. I had Ross winning but it shouldn't have gone to the scorecards in the first place

Daniel Ponce de Leon is a good fighter and indirectly this win raises Broner's stock a little too.

Didn't see the Rigo fight yet. He is a sublime boxer but against big hitters or elite opponents (e.g. Donaire), I will always be a little concerned about his chin which may be the one ***** in his armour, and is still relatively untested.

Santa Cruz was the vcash bet of the night!

Canelo is good but was a bit of a joke of a fight so hard to determine too much from it. Lopez looked very soft at the weigh-in as if his training had been to eat pies to build himself up. He is very game but doesn't belong in such a division, needs to go back down. Good opponent for Ricky Hatton in a fight or 2?

Haven't seen the Maidana fight but wouldn't be sold on him as a WW just yet, previously against Alexander he looked poor and said he wouldn't fight at the weight again, so not sure if he will be able to beat the elite at WW. Soto-Karass was a stepping stone his next fight will tell us more about his chances at WW

Don't know about Rocky Martinez

Sergio Martinez was very good and showed good heart, got caught with one big punch but survived. The knee injury is what I would be most worried about. Will ring adjust the P4P rankings again?

I think Chavez still can do well at middleweight, I think he gives almost all 160lbers problems with his size and relative power. There's a lot of good fights around the middleweight division at the moment, esp if Martinez is injured or moving down to 154. Chavez may lose his power adn size, his big assets, as he moves up in weight and I'm not sure I see a fight with Ward materialising.

 

The part in bold correct but I scored that fight a draw and many had Broner losing so his stock doesn't raise much.

I don't think Chavez can continue to make 160 lbs just going by the way he looked at the weigh in, although he does seem to have the ability to rehydrate a lot of weight come fight night.

Problem with Chavez is I can't see him doing all that well at 168 lbs since as you mention his advantage in size is gone and they all seem to have good skills and chin at 168 lbs top 5.

Didn't score the Hernanez vs Ross fight but it was close although I felt Ross should have won. The scores were way to wide either way.

 

Martinez is an elite fighter.

 

Who would he beat at SMW?

Ward? :rofl
Froch?
Kessler? :rofl
Abraham?
Dirrell? :rofl The punch stats would be even a bigger landslide.
Bute? Maybe if Bute's chin is as bad as it was in the Froch fight. But Jr.'s chin isn't granite neither and Bute does have power.

The five best in the division would clown him.

 

Chavez is more limited than we even previously believed, and if not for Martinez's bravado in the last round, Junior would have lost in a shut out.

That's the main thing we learned.

 

Maidana is back to being a bad ass.

 

A faded, boozing Pavlik gave a YOUNGER, sharper Martinez a tougher fight than prime Chavez gave to an older, fading Martinez.

Keep that in mind.

Junior is getting far too much credit for his lucky 12th round. He ****in blows.

 

That Martinez has heart and is a bit of a nutter. Fighting when your hurt with someone the size of Chavez is madness. Martinez showed a decent beard in the 12th, took some massive shots.

Maidana is looking better underr Garcia. He is using the jab and looked to have some skills rather than just a slugger.

Santa Cruz is a beast! He throws combinations and is a scary dude.

 

What i learned last night is that NO man can put on 30lbs overnight and have the energy (yes he flagged in the second half of the fight but not significantly) to compete with an elite level fighter without some unfair help!

In my mind marvilla won a shut out. That was bravado gone mad to show chavez how a champion fights!

That was no bravado there he was gassing out so he stood and traded. Quit making him out to be better than he is.
