McVey "inspired" me to do this... Say the fight is made instead of Tunney's defence against Heeney and the VERY BEST Sharkey turns up...who wins? If Sharkey wins, how does that re-shape boxing history? What happens to the HW title between 1928-30...any ideas?
Tunney beats Sharkey at any stage of their respective careers. Ice and discipline over hot headed emotion every time.
An "on" Sharkey would be a handful for any heavyweight, imo. He would be going into this fight with fairly recent wins over Wills, Godfrey ,and Delaney, and he was doing pretty good against the Mauler till he turned his head.
That's the kind of **** that spells the difference between him and Tunney essentially. Doing stupid **** like that in the heat of battle...that spells out "lack of discipline".
Agreed. Got to go with the more consistent fighter here. Also, when Gene's hands were healthy, he had good power, which Sharkey did not.
Dempsey didn't turn Sharkey's head..He crushed one of his testicles. Cheap win, should have been a DQ for Sharkey.
If you watch the fight which you obviously have not there is no sign that dempsey hit Sharkey that low. Maybe slightly below the belt or on the belt line but no way as low as you are trying to indicate.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0RLqeVfxo8[/ame] 3:52, it's really tough to tell clearly (even with the later slow mo replay)
Tunney was simply a better and more focused pure boxer over the hot-head Sharkey... Tunney wins a boring 15 rounder by a few points on all the cards, and see's Sharkey scream robbery.... Tunney was a seasoned pro, where as despite being a pro himself, Sharkey was an enigma to a large degree..... MR.BILL
your kidding right? Look at sharkey's facial expression after dempsey hits him twice very low, he is in excrutiating pain as he turns to the referee...his hand goes low to grab his balls..a natural reaction when you get hit in the nutsack
