After being chased to retirement by a blown up CW, how will history remember Vitali?

News is spreading of Vitali's decision to retire after his fight with Manuel Charr, which was the boxing equivelant of a fart in a phone box.

How do you think his decision to retire without taking on the opponent the people wanted to see him fight and the heir to his HW throne, David Haye?

I get the impression that after the Lewis fight Vitali knew he had found his level and was happy to hide in the shade of his Brother's limelight picking up scraps and facing unknown fighters like Charr, Sosnowksi and Gomez, while picking the odd fight with a plodding punch bag with a name like Arreola or Adamek.

I think this is reinforced by the fact that now he has tha chance to earn a career high pay day against a top quality fighter whose only HW loss came to the most dominant fighter of his era, he decides it's time to hang up the gloves and walk away from the sport.

For me, history will view Vitali as one of the great illusions of boxing. A man who built a fanbase of non-boxing fans by dominating fat, slow and small fighters after discovering he was not equipped to hang with the elite fighters.

Dude...the man is 60 years old, if Haye is so committed to winning a title or improving his legacy, why not chase Wlad?

chances are a promotion company similar to the Klitschos one will pick another dumb giant, train him to fight for boring draws and then get him to reign over HWs by picking midget opponents for ten years or until someone interested in the division turns up.

The promotions company makes a shitload of money, they go home happy, whilst lots of germans go home believing they own a peice of history in the tickets they purchased.

He doesn't deserve a Wlad rematch. He should defeat the number 2 ranked fighter in the division.

Vitali's career is a story of redemption

from the moment he quit vs Byrd he fought to redeem himself and he did vs Lewis

he changed everyones minds about him being a quitter that night and suddenly became a big star, his fights b4 retiring all were on HBO on American soil with the crowd cheering for him

He was becoming an American favorite and was taking control of the mess left after Lewis retired

Injury struck, he retired and did not face Rahman this hurt his American legacy big time, I dont think theres a debate, Vitali would have wiped the floor with Rahman but it never happened, He attempted another comeback vs McCline again injury prevailed

of course he did comeback after a 3 yr or so hiatus well past his prime and ppl still had no idea if he would be healthy, and he went on to deal out one of the worst heavyweight title beatings ive ever seen vs Peter

He then went on to have a major US fight in America vs Arreola which had good ratings and good action, but his reputation never seemed to recover from the Rahman mishap and a poor effort by Kevin Johnson was taken out on Vitali who would not appear on HBO for a few fights

past his prime he fought top ranked guys like Solis, Adamek and Chisora all in a row and dominated all 3 of them 2 of which didnt see the final bell

i know people want a Haye fight, i would like it but Vitali is old he is at a natural retiring age and Haye gave him the run around for how many yrs including a fake retirement

I think we forget that if you read old articles or watch old vids ppl said Lewis wasnt an ATG hadnt faced good enough opponents wasnt on top long enought

these are opinions that are now considered wrong and that Lewis is now a top 5 or 10 ATG without arguing

Then people said what Lewis did after Vitali was cowardly leading him on having him prove himself just to retire

    now nobody seems to mind

Vitalis career has been marked by missed opportunities and tragedy at times but i think history will look favorably upon his career

I hope Vitali does retire. He has had a fantastic comeback after his retirement, he has his health, money, and another career in politics. Haye had his chance with Vitali but fought Valuev instead. I can't help but feel that Haye calling out Vitali at 41 is just distastful...

Now that he cheated his sorry old ass out of the Charr brawl, I hope he retires in shame.

    Good riddance.
